Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Two stunning goals from Rene Howe and Ben Baker within the first 15 minutes again set the scene for a Kettering win at in-form Chesham. Ben Stephens wrapped it up 5 minutes from time as the Poppies recorded a notable victory. THE KETTERING SQUAD: There were a number of changes as the squad had to be rotated. In came Perry Cotton,Chris Carruthers,Will Grocott, Ben Baker and Ben Stephens. Liam Bateman,Herve Pepe-N’Goma,James Brighton and Will Carvalho were on the bench and both Spencer Weir-Daley and Gary Mulligan were out injured. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The pitch had had some standing water early in the morning but was fine at kick-off. It was the clash of the form teams as the Generals and Poppies, both had just one defeat in their 10 games. Chesham veteran Barry Hayles got in a second minute shot which was deflected into the path of fellow striker Ryan Blake- but he poked the shot wide. It was a great chance to open the scoring. The Poppies had a decidedly young look to their team and soon the youngsters started to put their mark on the game. Perry Cotton’s 3rd minute shot was deflected for a corner and from the restart Ben Baker set up Will Grocott for a shot which Shane Gore just managed to push round the post. From this corner, Rene Howe’s shot was deflected wide and from the third corner from Grocott, Brett Solkhon stabbed the ball wide. Kettering were playing down the slope and young Ben Baker was showing his marker,George Fenton, the benefit of pace as he looked dangerous every time the ball was played out to him. On 12 minutes David Popa was wrestled to the ground, and anywhere else on the pitch this was a stonewall free kick and potential yellow card. But it was in the penalty area with him facing his own goal and the Referee ignored it. A minute later Kettering scored. Liam Canavan won the ball and sent Baker off down the right. Baker looked up and crossed a great low ball into the path of Rene Howe who blasted the ball in from 15 yards. It was 2-0 a matter of 90 seconds later as Kettering scored another classy goal. This time neat interplay saw Popa put Canavan into the area on the left and his low left foot cross was met by Baker’s perfectly timed run to finish from close in. Chesham saw Kettering keeper, Craig Hill take a free kick at the second attempt and then save well from a firmly struck Bruce Wilson effort. On 23 minutes Sam Youngs’ piledriver saw Chris Carruthers’ head bravely in the way. Grocott fired just wide after a corner was cleared as the game was now more end to end. Chesham moved their team around at the back to try to counter Kettering’s attacking momentum. Wilson sent a shot out of the ground before the Generals had their closest effort on goal. Following a corner the ball was in the six yard box, with bodies everywhere, and Chesham could not find a player to force the ball over the line as Howe made an important clearance. The two final efforts of the half saw Popa create a good chance- but he fired over. Finally Toby Little’s left foot free kick was marginally wide of the post. Half Time: Chesham United 0 - 2 Kettering Town Chesham’s defensive reshuffle was complete after the break as Little was deployed to try to contain Baker, George Fenton went into central defence, and Curtis Ujah went off. Kelvin Bossman replaced Little on the left. The second period started with a succession of free kicks and corners for the home team as they started with a high tempo. Brett Solkhon cleared the first free kick and from the second, Wilson again sent the ball over the bar. The third was easily cleared and the fourth saw Solkhon clear from under his own bar. In between this pressure, Canavan managed a shot which was deflected for an unfruitful corner. On 59 minutes Hill distinguished himself with a good save from Youngs as Kettering held firm. The Poppies then got a free kick, their first of the half, on 61 minutes and the shot came off a defender. Kettering seemed to weather the storm and Youngs fired over the top and out of the ground as Chesham began to get a little frustrated. Kettering’s Popa was on the end of another good move, but had just strayed offside as he had only Gore to beat. It was then Kelvin Bossman’s turn to fire wildly out of the ground. Both teams used their full allocation of substitutes for differing reasons. It was Kettering’s game on 85 minutes as they scored a third goal. A good break saw Ben Stephens surge forward and although he lost the first ball, he won it back, turned inside and fired a left foot shot low past Gore’s left hand. In added time Hayles may have done better in front of goal with a clear header- but it was straight at Hill. Finally Stephens would have made it 4-0 if not for a great save from Gore, diving to his right, as his fingertips pushed the ball wide of the left post. The Poppies now have 3 home games- this Tuesday at 7.45pm when we entertain Leamington in a vital game, then on Thursday against Bedworth United (Pay what you want - mimimum £1) and on Saturday against Bideford.
