AFC Telford United took a deserved 12th minute lead through Connor McCarthy and impressed during the opening quarter. The Poppies gradually got themselves back into the game and were rewarded with two Courtney Baker-Richardson goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. It was then a case of controlling the game until the visitors piled on the pressure in the final minutes - but to no avail - and Kettering Town went into the hat for the next round.
There was one change only as Jevani Brown replaced Elliot Sandy and the bench of seven substitutes looked very strong.
It was a glorious autumn day at Latimer Park and the pitch looked very inviting.
The visitors - the higher ranked side - started very positively and initially looked to be much better than their lowly league position indicated. They were quicker to the ball with good movement and the quality of Sean Clancy was clear.
In only the third minute Darren Campion and Clancy created space on the left, but Clancy shot wide. Then from a corner on the right there was a chance for Telford in the six yard box – but somehow keeper, Enol Ordonez made the save.
Kettering’s first effort – a Liam Canavan shot – was wide of the right post.
Telford took the lead on 12 minutes after a mistake from Ordonez. Collecting a Steve Kinniburgh back pass, under pressure, he tried to dribble the ball but was robbed by Danny Glover, and the ball was squared to Connor McCarthy for an easy finish.
A couple of minutes later Glover sprang the offside trap, but his shot was high and wide.
The Poppies had started slowly and the goal seemed to spur them into action. There was a sight of goal for Brett Solkhon at a corner, but the ball was hastily cleared. From the clearance the ball was worked back and Jevani Brown set up Solkhon, but his right foot shot from the outside of the foot was saved by Telford keeper James Montgomery.
Andy Gooding’s 19th minute free kick was easy for Montgomery and from a Telford attack, Glover fired wide having again beaten any offside.
Kettering’s Gary Mulligan did exceptionally well to deny Clancy with the goal at his mercy, before a period of around 15 minutes saw the teams cancel each other out.
With five minutes of the half remaining The Poppies hit the post. As the ball was played forward, Gooding went over in the penalty area and the ball fell loose for Courtney Baker-Richardson whose right foot shot cannoned off of the left upright.
Clancy’s 41st minute shot came off a defender and rose high over the bar and at the other end, Solkhon headed over a James Brighton free kick.
Just on the break, good work by Baker-Richardson set up Will Grocott with a shot and Montgomery made an excellent save under his bar at the expense of a corner.
The second half started quietly – but was brought to life in the 49th minute by a Kettering equaliser. Great work by Brighton set up the leveller as the winger won the ball, on the right, at the goal line. Running towards goal, he beat a defender and crossed low for Baker-Richardson to slot the ball in.
Telford seemed stunned and Kettering now had their tails up as Montgomery was forced to palm the ball over from Brown’s shot.
It was soon 2-1 to The Poppies and Kinniburgh’s 59th minute cross from the left saw Baker-Richardson rise above the arms of Montgomery to plant a firm header into the net.
There was little being seen by Telford going forward until the 68th minute, when a cross from substitute Josh Brizzell was collected by Ordonez. There was then danger for Kettering as another substitute, Kaiman Anderson sent a low cross from the left, but there was no one at the far post to finish.
Kettering had introduced Dom Langdon, Elliot Sandy and Ollie Thorn and inside the last 10 minutes.
Sandy's first piece of action saw the striker head over the bar from a Gooding free kick.
The Poppies decided to pack their defence for the final minutes which allowed the visitors chances to get forward.
After a Telford corner had been cleared, the ball was played in again and Ordonez made a fantastic save from Glover diving to his left. From the ensuing corner, Paul McCone glanced a header wide.
The Poppies survived a late Clancy shot as Ordonez saved again and, after four minutes of added time, the game was won.
