Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: A game of vital importance to both teams was settled by penalties tonight. Unfortunately for the Poppies, two of them went to Redditch in the first half, converted by Ashley Sammons, and Kettering’s spot kick came from Wilson Carvalho in the second period. It was a tense second half as the game boiled over, as Kettering though caution to the wind but Redditch held out for the win.

THE SQUAD: With Gary Mulligan and Spencer Weir-Daley injured, the squad was stretched and Dom Langdon, Rene Howe, Herve Pepe-N’Goma and Wilson Carvalho started.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The slope (which will disappear next season) is one to fear at the Valley stadium and Redditch kicked off down the slope. The first of Sam Merson’s long throws into the six yard box in the 3rd minute was cleared to Will Richards and his low shot was marginally wide of Craig Hill’s left post. Kettering’s Liam Bateman then tried his long throw into the box and Carvalho’s rocket hit Jim Mutton and was cleared. Kettering had a penalty shout in just the 6th minute as Rene Howe went over and the Referee waived away claims but also declined to caution the player. Was there contact ? A little against the run of play, Redditch were gifted a penalty on 8 minutes. Hill called for the ball as it came through and made a hash of collecting-bringing down Eli Bako in the process. Ashley Sammons tucked away the spot kick sending Hill the wrong way. Bateman’s cross was taken by home keeper Jose Veiga and at the other end Mutton’s header across goal was well cleared by Chris Carruthers. In the same 14th minute, Rob Thompson-Brown had a good chance but fired high and wide. As Redditch had a good spell, Sammons left foot shot was well over the bar and a great Merson cross was cleared away by Brett Solkhon and away from Mutton. The Poppies slowly got themselves back into the game and a 26th minute foul on Rene Howe saw Carvalho mis-kick his shot but Veiga still had to make what was a comfortable save. The Poppies nearly scored on 32 minutes. A move down the right saw Carvalho set Bateman off down the right. His cross was met by James Brighton’s head but the effort flashed past the right post. Bateman crossed again a minute later and the otherwise quiet David Popa headed just over the bar. Veiga then had to get down to his right to save Brighton’s shot. The Poppies then created another great chance to equalize. Bateman crossed low and Howe controlled well, turned and shot, but it was spooned just over the bar from a great position. Disaster then struck for Kettering and keeper,Hill. Coming to get a ball on the right side of the area he was fooled by the bounce of the ball and brought down Simeon Maye. Hill received a yellow card and Sammons dispatched the second penalty exactly as the first, sending Hill the wrong way. There was just time in the half for Thompson-Brown to force a close range save from Hill as he helped on a header from a corner. Half Time: Redditch United 2 - 0 Kettering Town Kettering had little to lose now and came out with every intent to camp in the Redditch half- which they did. Liam Canavan’s 53rd minute shot was deflected for a corner as the Poppies piled on the pressure. Skipper Brett Solkhon was playing largely upfield, leaving just two or three at the back at times. Merson did break well, on 59 minutes, but fired well wide. Kettering were thrown a chance on 67 minutes as Cullilane-Liburd brought down Canavan and Carvalho smashed home a perfect penalty into the top right hand corner. Almost straight away Canavan met a cross from the right but his header lacked power and Veiga saved. Another home break saw Hill save a Sammons left foot effort. Obeng replaced the struggling Popa and, at the end of another good move, he fired just wide. In the same 73rd minute Carvalho’s cross was headed over his own bar by Mutton and then Obeng saw a shot deflected wide by an overworked defence. It was then Carvalho’s turn to see a good shot deflected wide and Ben Stephens, who had replaced Canavan, had a goalbound shot blocked. As Kettering threw almost everyone forward Redditch defended stoutly and, on the break, Merson could not convert a couple of chances and Carruthers defended well to block Danico Johnson’s shot. Hill was up for a couple of corners in a congested home penalty area. In the final minute of added time Obeng had a chance going through on goal and Veiga made the save of the match to deny Kettering any points. It’s now on to Latimer Park on Thursday when we entertain Bideford. We invite supporters to come to the final home league game of the season to cheer on the players and make that 12th man.
