Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL:

On a bitterly cold night at Sergeants Lawn, the Poppies went through to the final of the Hillier Cup, courtesy of two very late goals from Brett Solkhon. For a lot of this game it would have been hard for the neutral to recognize the higher ranked team, and the Corinthians must surely have felt a little hard done by after a great effort.

THE KETTERING SQUAD:

In came Bleu McNeil, Elliot Sandy, Will Grocott, Courtney Baker-Richardson, Ben Stephens and Ben Baker. Ben Bradshaw was included amongst the substitutes.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED:

The Corinthians probably edged the first half, gaining lots of good possession and creating the better of the chances. Craig Hill made an early good save before Ben Stephens had Kettering’s first effort and this was well saved by home keeper, Liam Waddy. Ben Baker sent a lovely cross over for Courtney Baker-Richardson but the header was over the bar. The home side had good possession for a sustained period with Dom Page and Jordan Henson showing up well and there was also a competitive battle between Aaron Watts at right back and Wilson Carvalho, as the Referee had to speak to both players. Baker-Richardson had another heading chance from James Brighton’s corner- but the header lacked pace. Ben Stephens saw a shot deflected wide as the Poppies forced three corners in quick succession. It was Corinths who had the best chance though as Andy White was clear on goal- but Hill saved well. White then caused the keeper further problems as his 30 yard shot just cleared the bar with Hill scrambling back. Half time: 0-0 Kettering came out with a bit more determination and Sandy’s back header from Brighton’s free kick was wide. Corinths came back and Joey Wright got clear on the left but poked the shot over the bar. White saw his shot saved before Bleu McNeil fired wide for Kettering. Henson miscued wide for Corinths and Sandy saw a shot on the turn well blocked. The game seemed to be petering out as a Carvalho shot went out for a throw in! Just as the frozen fans were resigned to penalties and not long after Liam Canavan emerged as a substitute, Kettering scored. Sandy set up Brett Solkhon and he forced the ball in. Solkhon then scored as second five minutes later as he met a Brighton free kick with a firm header which eluded Waddy in goal.

The Poppies will meet AFC Rushden and Diamonds in the final at Sixfields on Tuesday 12th April.

On Saturday next Paulton Rovers are the visitors to Latimer Park in the League (3pm).The Pitch is currently free of standing water and the signs are good – heavy rain permitting.
