Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: A better second half performance from the Poppies saw them gain a win over battling Stratford tonight. The visitors overall probably had the better of the chances, but clinical finishing from David Popa and Spencer Weir-Daley in the 58th and 67th minutes and a penalty from Wilson Carvalho saw them 3-0 up. Michael McGrath claimed an 86th minute consolation goal.

THE KETTERING SQUAD: Dom Langdon started, as did Chris Carruthers, back from suspension, and loanee David Popa. Out were Brett Solkhon (hamstring), Herve Pepe-N'Goma and Spencer Weir-Daley, who were amongst the substitutes along with the recalled Ben Baker and Jamie McAlindon.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: With the A14 closed the kick-off was delayed until just after 8pm for a decent looking Tuesday crowd. The first half wasn't a classic and Stratford probably created the better chances, finding Craig Hill in good form. Kettering's James Brighton saw his early shot blocked and then visiting striker Mark Magee saw a decent looking cross well cut out by Hill. David Popa, making his first start for the Poppies, saw a shapshot go wide and on 11 minutes James Brighton's free kick, on the right, curled in towards goal but was just wide of the left upright. Stratford began to look more lively and Hill was forced to make a good save from Dior Angus. From the resulting corner, Liam Francis had a free header- but was wide of the target. It was then Jamie Sheldon on the left side and as he created space the shot was over Hill's bar. On 22 minutes Kettering could have scored. Rene Howe's shot was well saved by Andy Kemp and the keeper got a hand on the follow up shot from Brighton. The ball was cleared by a defender off the line, although TV replays later showed that the ball may have been over the line. On 28 minutes Liam Canavan's shot was wide after a clearance fell to him, and at the other end Kieren Westwood put a left foot shot wide. Hill took a dangerous cross from Sheldon and Kettering's Brighton had another shot saved, but, in truth, the half petered out. Stratford forced two early corners in the second half as they started the half brightly. Both were cleared. Hill then had to make a save from an Angus left foot drive, and tipped over a great shot from Magee. Despite this, the Poppies began to look more threatening up top and Wilson Carvalho had a shot saved as did substitute,Spencer Weir-Daley. David Popa saw a shot blocked on 57 minutes- but he went one better a minute later. Great work by Brighton on the left saw the cross reach Weir-Daley at the back post. His low cross was swept into goal by Popa. A few minutes later, Richard Gregory forced another good save from Hill but on 67 minutes it was 2-0. Carvalho, now on the left swept a right foot cross in and Weir-Daley expertly glanced his header just inside the far post. Stratford were still trying and McGrath fired over on 71 minutes. A minute later, Angus had a great chance as, clear on goal, he blazed over the bar. Westwood also got forward again on the left and his left foot screamer was over the top. On 81 minutes, Kettering substitute, Ben Stephens' shot was blocked but a minute later it was 3-0. Herve Pepe- N'Goma, on for Canavan, got into the penalty area on the left and as he closed in on goal was brought down. Carvalho blasted home the penalty. Stratford pulled a goal back four minutes from time as McGrath latched onto a clearance and his left foot shot went in at the right post. Hill then had to make a save virtually on the goal line from Angus to prevent another goal in the game. Kettering now have an Easter weekend of two home games: Slough on Saturday and Bedworth on Monday -both 3pm kick-offs. Come and support the lads in these two vital games.
