Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: The Poppies completed what, in the end, was a comfortable 2-0 win at the Greene King Community Stadium with second half goals from Liam Canavan and substitute Callum Westwood. The game kicked off 10 minutes late with the agreement of the Referee and Managers- although the Kettering team had arrived at 2.20pm due to the usual summer holiday traffic. THE SQUAD: Paul Walker got the nod in goal. New signing James Haran was at right back with Liam Bateman still not fit. With Wilson Carvalho suspended and Ben Baker injured, Nathan Bobowicz started his first full league game. Sam Smith was on the bench after injury as were new signings, Callum Westwood and Jordan Wilson. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: It was a warm sunny day in Dorset as the team and supporters fought their way to the ground through the traffic jams. Kettering started really well and debutant Nathan Bobowicz had two glorious chances to put his team in front. After just two minutes Liam Canavan sent him clear- but the low shot was poor and keeper, Shane Murphy saved well. Three minutes later a poor clearance gave Bobowicz a great opportunity- but he dragged his shot well wide of the left upright. Dorchester forced two corners, which were cleared and on 18 minutes Ketterings Nathan Hicks fired wide from 25 yards. Canavan headed wide on 20 minutes from James Brightons free kick. On the half hour, the Magpies created their first real chance with good interplay between Liam Sayers and Mario Mateus- but Sayers shot was high and wide. The Poppies replied and Rene Howe showed good control for a shot- which flew just over the bar. It was end to end though, and Dory Yates sent a 30 yard shot just wide with Paul Walker stretching. A couple of minutes later, following a set piece, the ball was played back into the Kettering area and the ball spooned off of Nathan Walkers knee and went over the bar. The final goal effort in the half was Ketterings, as Howe glanced a James Haran cross wide of goal. Half Time: Dorchester Town 0 - 0 Kettering Town Dorchester came out quickly and, within a minute of the restart Mateus stabbed wide after Nathan Walker headed on a long throw. The Poppies took the lead six minutes into the half. Rene Howe took a quick throw on the right, Spencer Weir-Daley set up Canavan who lobbed coolly over Murphy. Kettering seemed to be in control, although home player-manager, Mark Jermyn got a good shot in, which was deflected wide of goal for an unproductive corner. Both sides made two substitutions and the Referee stopped the game for a drinks break in view of the heat. Kettering were restricting their hosts any goal attempts at this stage and the next shot on any goal was on 76 minutes when Howe ballooned the ball out of the ground! Callum Westwood had replaced Bobowicz, playing down the right in front of Haran, and he scored Ketterings second goal, on his league debut, on 78 minutes. Home keeper Murphy, with the ball at his feet, tried a clearance but Westwood got in a block and the ball fell kindly for him to stab the ball home from 15 yards. Sam Smith - on for Weir-Daley - could have made it three on 84 minutes, when sent clear by Canavan- but overran the ball allowing Murphy to eventually smother. The final chance, in added time, fell to Nathan Walker for the Magpies but he could not direct his header at the far post after a corner on the right.
