Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Going behind to a goal from Redditch wing back Jordan Jones after just 15 minutes, and taking the usual 20 minutes to get used to the surface, the Poppies controlled the rest of the game. Their reward was to score three goals in the final 25 minutes to win the game. The scorers were Callum Westwood on 66 minutes and two from substitute Spencer Weir-Daley in the 73rd and 85th minutes. THE KETTERING SQUAD: The squad was stretched again with Wilson Carvalho suspended, and Liam Bateman,Chris Carruthers,Liam Canavan and Ben Baker all out injured. Nathan Hicks returned to the line up as did Ben Stephens. Bleu McNeil and Nathan Bobowicz came onto the bench with Craig Hill helping out a goalkeeping problem at Rugby Town HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Paul Walker, in the Kettering goal, was soon in action coming off his line to smother a through ball. Then Rene Howe created space and curled a left foot shot just past the left upright. Redditch were moving the ball nicely at this stage and Kettering were finding it difficult to pick up the runners, with Reece Hales in particular finding space. Walker was down smartly to save a Jordan Jones low shot and then Hales got clear on the left but his low cross flashed across the goal. Jazz Luckie blazed over the bar as the Reds looked in control. On 12 minutes Kettering broke and James Brighton’s cross from the left was met by Callum Westwood – but the shot was just wide of the left upright. What Kettering could not do with that effort- Redditch could. A carbon copy at the other end saw Hales cross from the left and Jones met the ball on the right and the finish was low and in off the left upright. Redditch were buoyed by the goal and Luckie saw his shot deflected for a corner.Danico Johnson then glanced a header wide. Finally Kettering got going, and after he had miscued a shot wide, Ben Stephens almost equalised on 25 minutes. Meeting an excellent Brighton cross Stephens’ header was saved by Bradley Catlow. The Poppies were beginning to control the midfield now and on 32 minutes Howe put Brighton clear, and he was impeded by a defender and it allowed Catlow to get down to smother the ball. The next minute saw Howe going clear but he was penalised for a handball. Westwood then got clear down the left but he screwed his shot across the face of the goal. It really was all Kettering. Catlow saved a Hicks’ shot high to his right and the keeper then made a fantastic save from Stephens’ flick from Brighton’s cross. Catlow then save well from Howe and then the keeper was almost caught out by Westwood’s block but the ball fell kindly for the defence to clear. Finally in the half, a free kick found its way through to Brett Solkhon- but the Referee’s whistle stopped play for some unknown reason. Half Time: Redditch United 1 - 0 Kettering Town The Referee must have wanted to get home early, as he failed to add on time at the end of the first half despite the Redditch physio coming on twice and a drinks break- and then he brought the players out early to start the second half ! Spence Weir-Daley came on for the injured Stephens on 50 minutes. Kettering started where they left off and and Jones had to clear a dangerous Howe cross. Weir-Daley had a great chance to equalize on 54 minutes as he was put clear. Again Catlow made a great save to his left, and also saved the follow up from Hicks who was injured in the process. Redditch did get a shot in after 56 minutes but Johnson’s effort was high and wide. Johnson then got the better of Gary Mulligan – and Walker saved the shot. Sam Smith replaced the injured Hicks on 58 minutes and had to play in midfield. On 64 minutes a quick corner was played low to Westwood whose low shot was saved by Catlow. Kettering equalized on 66 minutes. Catlow made yet another great save, this time from Howe- but Callum Westwood coolly slotted a left foot shot just inside the right post. More was to come for Kettering and they took the lead after 73 minutes. Howe slipped the ball through to Weir Daley and his first time left foot shot was expertly guided past the diving Catlow. Redditch had to come out now- having been penned back most of the half and Skipper Duane Courtney saw Walker make a good save. The points were secured for Kettering after 85 minutes. Brighton’s cross from the right to the far post saw Weir-Daley guide the header past Catlow. Redditch had a chance from a free kick, but Cameron Young headed over. The Poppies had the final efforts with Howe firing wide and Dom Langdon had a great chance but sent the ball over the bar.
