Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Three defensive lapses and a missed penalty signalled a 3-0 home defeat today to Stratford Town. That makes it three home games without a goal and one point gained as the Poppies slipped to 17th in the table. The Stratford goals came on 30 minutes through Richard Gregory, and second half goals on 69 minutes through ex Poppy, Will Grocott, and 75 minutes through Jamie Sheldon. Wilson Carvalho missed a penalty in added time of the first half. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Liam Bateman and Liam Canavan returned from injury. Wilson Carvalho returned from suspension and Kaid Mohamed made his debut. Out of the squad were the injured Sam Smith and Callum Westwood, Nathan Bobowicz, and the unavailable Dom Langdon. Rene Howe was still suspended and Chris Carruthers made the substitutes bench after injury. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The game was to be played in part in heavy rain, thunder and lightning with occasional tranquility, although the pitch drained well. The Poppies started brightly and Spencer Weir-Daley’s pass across goal was just too much for Kaid Mohamed. Then Liam Canavan’s low shot was held by ex Poppies keeper, Niall Cooper. A 4th minute Stratford corner was easily cleared and Mohamed’s low effort for Kettering was saved by Cooper as the first bout of thunder and lightning struck. James Brighton’s 11th minute free kick deflected off the wall and his 16th minute cross was cleared to Liam Canavan who shot wide. Stratford got a sight of goal in the 19th minute and Edwin Ahenkorah’s curling left foot effort was well saved by Paul Walker- diving to his right. Kettering kept coming forward with quick passing and Liam Bateman’s 22nd minute cross was glanced wide by Mohamed. Then Weir-Daley had a chance, but, off balance, he shot tamely wide. Cooper smothered well from Gary Mulligan’s header on as Weir-Daley ran on. The ball was in the net on 28 minutes as Cooper dropped the ball as he landed after a catching the ball- but a foul was awarded. Somewhat against the run of play Stratford scored. James Brighton won a ball deep in defence- but the clearance was poor and the ball was worked back into the penalty area for Richard Gregory to fire over Walker as the defence went missing. Kettering were rocked and it wasn’t until another 7 minutes they threatened as Canavan’s free kick was just over the bar. The Poppies were given a lifeline in added time as Brett Solkhon was felled in the area. Wilson Carvalho took the spot kick which he sent over the bar. Just on the break Mohamed saw a low shot held by Cooper. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 1 Stratford Town Kettering surely had to come out all guns blazing as the half started and Mohamed’s cross from the left was taken by Cooper. However it was Stratford who threatened in the early minutes. Bateman did well to block Jamie Sheldon’s shot and then Mohamed was seen in defence doing the same thing. On 50 minutes Solkhon did well to block a Gregory shot and in the next minute he blocked Ahenkorah’s effort. Stratford still threatened as a good move saw Kieran Westwood spurn a great chance as his left foot effort cleared the bar. Then, on 57 minutes, Gregory created a his own space to shoot, but fired wide from a great position. Stratford had another chance on 63 minutes as Brighton lost possession and substitute Simeon Tulloch fired badly wide from the right. It was 2-0 on 69 minutes. James Haran lost possession unnecessarily 25 yards out, and the ball was played to Will Grocott. His right foot curler glanced off Chris Carruthers’ head and gave Walker no chance to save. The Poppies tried to respond and Solkhon’s header was saved by Cooper and the keeper then saved from Mohamed. The third goal on 75 minutes was also a bad defensive error. A looping ball over Haran saw Walker out to clear outside his area. His header was poor and Sheldon expertly fired the ball 40 yards into the unguarded net. The final quarter of an hour was played out in the rain with Mohamed putting a free kick over the bar. Cooper saved a Mulligan header and substitute Jordan Wilson headed wide. The Poppies now head to Kings Lynn on Easter Monday for what will be a tough game (3pm kick-off).
