Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: The Poppies had a much greater share of possession today in this game but still had to come from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw. Unfortunately defensive errors were costly. The Puritans took the lead after 25 minutes through a Ricky Johnson penalty with Rene Howe equalising 13 minutes later. In added time in the first half a dreadful error gifted George Jeacock a goal for Banbury and James Haran equalised in the 61st minute. Both teams could have won it, hitting the woodwork in the final quarter. Liam Canavan, who only entered the fray in the 73rd minute left the field 17 minutes later after receiving two yellow cards. THE KETTERING SQUAD: It was the same starting line up as last week, with Liam Canavan replacing Ben Bradshaw on the bench. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Some 12 hours of rain before the game saw the pitch still in very good condition, with no standing water, as the rain continued. Banbury lined up with 5 at the back- but in the first minute should have scored. New loan signing, George Jeacock showed good pace and his shot hit the right post. The ball rebounded across goal and Mark Janes headed at goal but there was not enough pace on the ball to get past the recovering Craig Hill. Kettering then had a chance as Rene Howe had a header from Liam Bateman’s cross but Ricky Johnson was there to kick the ball away from the goal line. A couple of minutes later Kettering had a glorious chance. Spencer Weir-Daley crossed and Brett Solkhon headed over, unchallenged. Kettering were playing some flowing football, with Banbury conceding ground and getting 9 or 10 players behind the ball. Bateman got in another cross which threatened, but Howe could just not reach the header. On 18 minutes, keeper Jack Harding got down low to his right to push a Wilson Carvalho shot round the left post. Then a 22nd minute Banbury free kick deflected off of Andy Gunn for a free kick. Banbury took the lead from the penalty spot. Jeacock on the right went down easily, hooking his legs into James Brighton’s- and the Referee Mr.Law, immediately pointed to the spot. Ricky Johnson smashed home the penalty. The Poppies almost replied immediately as Weir-Daley crossed from the right and Kaid Mohammed’s header was glanced wide of the left post. Nathan Hicks was then felled in a late tackle as he shot. Harding saved the initial shot and James Brighton’s free kick was over the bar. Kettering’s equaliser and their first home league goal of the season had a touch of fortune about it. A cross from the left was knocked away but came off a defender back towards goal. Howe collected the loose ball and turned to sweep the ball in. Four minutes later, Jeacock caused more problems with a low shot which was scrambled clear as far as Janes and Hill saved the shot. Banbury went in at half time leading 2-1. In the second minute of added time, Kettering keeper,Hill went down to collect a routine low cross. As the ball squirmed out of his grasp, and no attacker near him, he seemed to panic and kicked the ball straight to Jeacock, who had the simplest of finishes from a few yards out. Half Time: Kettering Town 1 - 2 Banbury United There was early danger for Kettering as the ball was given away and from the resulting corner, the ball was scrambled clear. Kettering then forced three successive corners to no avail as the final one saw Hicks fire wide. Then Howe had a chance which seemed to skim off his head under pressure from Harding. The 54th minute saw a one-two between Hicks and Weir-Daley and Hicks’ piledriver was palmed over by Harding. Then Mohammed set up Howe- but the volley skewed wide. Felipe Barcelos then created space for Banbury- but Hill took the cross. Mohammed’s 58th minute free kick on the left sailed past the right post, as Kettering continued to dominate play. The equaliser on 61 minutes came from nowhere. James Haran collected the ball in defence, strode forward and tried his luck from about 40 yards with a low shot. The ball sliced off the wet surface and caught Harding totally unaware as it went in at the left upright. Aaron O’Connor replaced Weir-Daley on 62 minutes and was soon in the action. Set up by Howe- his left foot shot was saved. Kettering were piling on the pressure now and Howe headed wide from a Wilson Carvalho corner. Liam Canavan replaced Hicks on 73 minutes and just 4 minutes later saw his header rattle the crossbar from Brighton’s cross.Next,Mohammed saw a header saved from yet another Carvalho corner. Going into the last 10 minutes, all Kettering’s pressure had come to little and the game was anyone’s as Banbury substitute,Darius Browne, saw his header come off a post with 9 minutes to go. Then O’Connor had two great chances for Kettering. Firstly on 82 minutes he raced clear on the right- but he fluffed his shot. Then with 3 minutes remaining, a glorious first time through ball from Canavan saw him hone in on goal and only a last ditch Johnson block saved the day for the Puritans. There was still plenty of action as the game entered added time. Firstly Canavan was sent off for two yellow card offences after he misjudged a tackle in the 90th minute. Then Johnson thought he had scored the winner as he beat Hill to the ball and headed in- only to be ruled offside, and in the 3rd minute of added time substitute Mark Bell hit the outside of the post with a first time shot. The very final action saw Kettering’s Brighton force his way through and only a great save from Harding prevented a winning goal.
