Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: This game essentially changed in the 17th minute. Kettering had taken a 5th minute lead through Wilson Carvalho and looked like scoring again. The 17th minute saw a red card for Rene Howe, his second of the season- and from then on a favourable result for the home team was in question. Despite the 10 men issue, the Poppies were worth their 1-0 lead until Dunstable substitute, Kevin Bossman, equalised on 66 minutes with his first touch. Dunstable were then awarded three penalties, and scored two of them through Jack Hutchinson on 68 minutes and Alexander Cathline four minutes into added time. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Paul White returned in goal. Lewis Hornby replaced Brett Solkhon who was not 100% after illness. James Haran, on four yellow cards, was rested and Paul Malone made his Kettering League debut. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Kicking with the wind towards the Morrisons end, Kettering started on the offensive on a lovely autumn afternoon. Spencer Weir-Daley had the ball in the net after just three minutes but the Assistant’s flag was up for an offence. Rene Howe then sent Weir-Daley through but Jack Smith was sharply off his line to save with his legs. Not to be denied, Kettering took the lead after just five minutes. Nathan Hicks threaded the ball through on the left and James Brighton’s low cross was blasted in by the fast arriving Wilson Carvalho. Weir-Daley created another opening in the 11th minute and Smith had to get down to save the low shot at his right post. It wasn’t until the thirteenth minute that Dunstable threatened. A quick free kick saw Jack Hutchinson clear on the left- but Liam Bateman got in a timely block to stop the cross. From the corner, Daniel Green headed just over. In the 17th minute Rene Howe was sent off. The ball went out for a Kettering throw and Howe collected the ball with Jack Hutchinson harrassing him from behind. Hutchinson fell to the floor, holding his face and the Referee, Mr. Dallison issued a red card to the Kettering man. Kettering had at least 73 minutes to play with 10 men- a tall order. The Blues forced a 24th minute free kick and David Longe-King’s header was over the bar. The Poppies however were giving it a go and looking comfortable at this stage. Hicks fired wide after 28 minutes. A few minutes later, Lewis Hornby’s free kick came off the keeper’s legs and Weir-Daley with a great chance inside the six yard box, somehow pulled the ball wide. Four minutes later Jon Sonuga was pulled up for a handball and yellow carded – but it was not a penalty- just a free kick at the very edge of the penalty area. Brighton’s free kick came off the wall for a corner – and Paul Malone headed over from the restart. Weir- Daley saw a shot saved and then in added time Shane Bush had a decent chance for Dunstable, but-slightly off balance- he headed wide. Half Time: Kettering Town 1 - 0 Dunstable Town The second period started as the first half finished with Kettering matching their opponents.Brighton had a shot saved and another blocked and Hornby fired over. But really Dunstable, at this stage, were not making any inroads. This was to change in the space of three minutes. Kevin Bossman replaced Longe-King on 65 minutes and scored with his first touch. Jhai Dillon found space on the left and his measured cross gave Bossman the easiest of headers at the near post. Worse followed for Kettering. Just two minutes later, Alexander Cathline went down under a soft challenge from Malone. This time the Referee adjudged it just inside the penalty area. Hutchinson’s penalty was high to Paul White’s left and Dunstable were in front. Kettering’s three substitutes were on by the 72nd minute and a minute later one of the three,Liam Canavan, on for Hicks, headed over the bar. White made his first save on the match on 77 minutes as Hutchinson’s shot skewed off the midfielder’s right boot and was heading for the top corner before the Keeper’s intervention. Two minute later, Aaron O’Connor, on for Weir-Daley, created an opening but fired wide of the right post. Dunstable had their second penalty on 82 minutes, Cathline- clearly a couple of yards offside raced into the box and went down under Malone’s challenge. This time White made an excellent save to his left from Hutchinson. Cathline was over again in the box three minutes later under a challenge from behind by Dom Langdon- a clear penalty- not given by the Referee. Bossman fired wide from the left as Kettering threw men forward. O’Connor flashed a cross/ shot from the right through every one, with just two minutes of normal time to go. The Poppies were tiring though and could just not get that equalising goal. In fact Dunstable were awarded a third penalty after four of the six minutes of added time. This time Hutchinson went through on the left and as White came out,Hutchinson went down. Was there actually any contact ? Cathline converted the penalty to complete the scoring. The Poppies have another chance to win a home game on Tuesday evening at home to Hayes and Yeading (7.45pm).
