Match Report

MATCH SPONSORS: ELGOODS BREWERY IN A NUTSHELL: Looking for their first home league win of the season, the Poppies were 1-0 down after just 25 seconds of this game due to Yannis Ambroisine’s header. Kettering then had 75% possession but could only reply with a single goal scored by Liam Canavan in the 59th minute. THE KETTERING SQUAD: James Brighton was out injured and Brett Solkhon was on the bench having just recovered from illness. Paul Malone was replaced by James Haran,Aaron O’Connor replaced Spencer Weir-Daley. Liam Canavan and Kaid Mohamed got a start. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Hayes and Yeading shocked their hosts within seconds of the start of the game. A cross from the left was met by Yassin Ambroisine and his looping header went over a surprised Paul White. The visitors followed this up with a shot from Cole King which was over the bar. Kettering’s tentative start finally came to life as Rene Howe and Wilson Carvalho combined to set up Aaron O’Connor, whose shot was saved by Louis Wells. Then Liam Bateman’s cross was well taken by the keeper. Howe looped a 14th minute shot high and wide and in the next minute there was agreat chance to equalise. Carvalho’s cross to the far post saw Kaid Mohamed with time and space- but the header was straight at Wells. Bateman was yellow carded for a foul tackle on 17 minutes and the subsequent free kick unsettled the home defence, only for the ball to drift harmlessly across goal. Liam Canavan’s 18th minute turn and shot looked good- but Wells was well positioned to save. Then Mohamed’s deflected shot fell nicely for Wells to catch. Howe combined with Aaron O’Connor who could just not control the ball to trouble Wells. Hayes finally got out of their half and Cole Brown’s left foot screamer was wide of the right post. There was another chance for Kettering on 27minutes, when Hornby’s corner on the left found Howe at the far post – but he headed wide. Carvalho then ballooned a left foot shot high over the bar. Lewis Hornby’s 35th minute drive was on target and Wells did very well to parry, diving low to his left. Kettering kept coming forward and before the break Canavan set up Howe and the left foot curler was just over the top. Then Howe set up O’Connor whose shot was blocked. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 1 Hayes and Yeading United Kettering’s frustration escalated after the break as they struggled to break down a stubborn defence. Canavan lobbed the ball over after a one-two with O’Connor and then O’Connor tried to hook the ball over his shoulder but the effort was wide of goal. The goal did come though in the 59th minute. Howe did well on the left and slid the ball to Canavan who finished with a low right foot shot in at the right post. Kettering quickly followed this up and this time Howe set up O’Connor on the right but the shot was across goal and wide of the left upright. Hayes finally got out of their half again on 64 minutes but Adam Everitt hoofed the ball over the bar and out of the ground. Four minutes on and the visitors had a marvelous chance to score again. Bateman underhit his back pass and Cole Brown rounded White. With the whole of the goal to aim at he lifted the ball high over the bar from a few yards out – and surely would have scored had Bateman not got back quickly to challenge. Kettering were still trying and Mohamed saw his goalbound shot blocked and substitute Spencer Weir-Daley could just not get a foot to Howe’s header on. Some more loose Poppies defending the saw Cole have another chance which was blocked out. Kettering finished the stronger and Weir-Daley was only stopped by a last ditch tackle. Finally, Wells did make a couple of mistakes after having such a good game but he got away with them. Firstly he dropped a Mohamed cross and recovered to hold the ball on the line. Then he dropped a Howe shot but recovered to pickup the ball. That’s six home league games this season now without a win. It’s back to cup action on Saturday as we entertain Boston United in the Emirates F A Cup – kick-off 3pm.
