Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: The Saints, with only three points from their 7 away games were 2-0 up at half time through James Hall and Sam Mulready. The Poppies, with only three points from their 7 home games scored twice in the second half through Aaron O’Connor and Wilson Carvalho and finished the game with chances to win it – but failed to find a winner despite a number of chances. So the home league misery continues. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Dean Snedker continued in goal and with Gary Mulligan and Paul Malone injured, James Haran and Dom Langdon started in the middle of defence and James Brighton dropped to left back. Lewis Hornby came into midfield, and Callum Westwood and Steve Kinniburgh were on the bench as the Bens, Bradshaw and Baker, were rested due to the F A Youth Cup tie the following day. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: As the players kicked off the rain lashed in on a stiff breeze, which favoured the visitors in the first half. The Saints had the first corner and from the clearance Jonny Hall fired wide. The Poppies’ James Brighton then put in a great cross from the left which was cleared away from Spencer Weir-Daley. Weir-Daley then got in another testing cross from the right but there was no Kettering player to apply the final touch. As the game swung from end to end, Brighton lost possession in defence, but Sam Mulready’s shot was poor. The wind was certainly having an influence in the game as several Kettering attempts to head the ball saw it go over their heads. Nathan Hicks’ shrewd through ball down the middle almost found Brett Solkhon but visiting keeper,Alex Archer, collected. Then Brighton saw a shot blocked and Weir-Daley had the ball in the net-but was offside. St Neots went one up on 22 minutes. James Hall was right on the left touchline and sent the ball into the home penalty area.It sailed over keeper,Dean Snedker and in underneath the bar. With the goalscorer failing to celebrate initially, it could be assumed it was a fluke. The Poppies were stunned, yet again, and Michael Hyem’s 25th minute shot was deflected away for a corner. Weir-Daley’s turn and shot on 33 minutes was just wide with Archer beaten, and the same player saw his shot well blocked in the next minute. Weir-Daley’ s cross from the left in the 37th minute was just too far for Rene Howe to meet. St Neots doubled their lead from a set piece a minute before the break. A free kick on the right was headed back across goal by Tom Ward for Mulready to find the finishing touch from a few yards out. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 2 St Neots Town Weir-Daley and Hicks were replaced at half time with Aaron O’Connor and Liam Canavan as Brett Solkhon went into defence and James Brighton was pushed up into midfield. James Hall had a great early chance but lashed the ball over the bar. Kettering replied from a corner- but Canavan headed over. Canavan, playing with a broken toe, then had a shot blocked. Kettering were huffing and puffing, as Tom Wood replaced the struggling Saints skipper,Tom Ward, in defence. The Poppies got a goal back in the 57th minute. Howe won a header on to Aaron O’Connor, and the substitute finished well past Archer. Two minutes later the same player could have equalised. Sent clear with only Archer to beat, the shot was at the keeper, who saved well. St Neots were now rarely seen in the Kettering half- but nearly scored again with a fluke in the 60th minute. A Kettering clearance hit a player and looped up under the bar- but Snedker just got a touch to palm it over the bar. It was really all Kettering. Canavan saw another shot blocked and Howe headed wide from a Brighton free kick. The equaliser on 67 minutes came from a defensive error, as Jonny Hall misjudged the ball in the wind and Wilson Carvalho raced clear to finish low past Archer. Hyem got in a 76th minute shot which Snedker held and a minute later Solkhon headed wide from a Kettering corner. The final 10 minutes saw Kettering surging forward as a number of chances failed to find a winner. Carvalho saw his 82nd minute shot well blocked;Canavan fired over from a good position; Canavan fired over again after good work by Dom Langdon. Chances to win the game kept coming as Canavan’s shot was blocked, and both substitute Callum Westwood and Wilson Carvalho had sight of goal- but both fired wildly high. The Poppies try again on Saturday at home against old rivals Weymouth.
