Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: The Poppies ground out a win at Hayes and Yeading today.Going 1-0 down to a Lewis Putman strike on 37 minutes, they came back strongly in the second half and goals from Dom Langdon in the 67th minute and Rene Howe 5 minutes from time took the points. THE KETTERING SQUAD: James Haran was serving the first of his two match ban for collecting 10yellow cards. Aaron O’Connor and Paul Malone were out with injury and Dean Snedker has joined Cambridge City. Lewis Hornby was fit for the bench after a month out and was joined by the returning Ben Baker. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: It was a grey day at Holloways Park Beaconsfield and the pitch was fine, after being used yesterday. The Handy had three additions to the squad, which featured a number of ex Kings Langley players and players on loan from Wealdstone, Hemel Hempstead and Slough. Both sides started positively and Lewis Putman won an early corner for the hosts, which was cleared. For Kettering, James Brighton’s cross from the left was just too far across goal. Home leading scorer, Mitchell Weiss, had a 9th minute effort blocked by Dom Langdon and Putman’s cross from the left was headed away by Brett Solkhon for a fruitless corner. The Poppies threatened on 17 minutes as Matthew Barnes-Homer flicked on a Liam Bateman long throw, but the ball was held by keeper, Danny Boness. Nathan Hicks then ballooned a shot over and his 20th minute cross was inches away from James Hall’s head. In the next minute,Rene Howe shot wide. Kettering kept the pressure on and Brighton’s driving run saw his shot deflected away for a corner. From the restart, Gary Mulligan’s firm on-target shot was well blocked by Wes Parker. From this corner, Putnam spooned the ball high into the air. It bounced, spun and landed on the top of the crossbar and out only for the officials to give a goal kick. Putman’s 27th minute free kick from just outside the box saw Paul White save well and then Soloman Samboa’s shot was blocked. Hayes and Yeading took the lead in the 37th minute as Putnam ran onto a good through ball on the left and finished well past White at the near post. The Poppies were rocked as they had looked comfortable until that point and White was called on to save from Callum Adebiyi. James Hall’s 39th minute cross from the left was overhit and the home side came again before half time in the shape of Weiss. First his curled shot was only just wide and, finally in the half, he forced a corner which led to two more corners for Kettering to successfully defend. Half Time: Hayes and Yeading United 1 - 0 Kettering Town Putman was soon in action as he crossed for Weiss to head over. Kettering’s Nathan Hicks lobbed a shot to Boness and then Matthew Barnes-Homer released Hall- but the shot was badly wide. Barnes- Homer then had a shot blocked and the hosts broke only for Weiss to scuff his shot. Kettering began to take some control and bringing on Liam Canavan and Wilson Carvalho for Barnes- Homer and Jack Kelly seemed to change the play. A good move saw Brighton drag a shot wide from a good position. After a Kettering free kick, Hall saw Boness save the shot and Carvalho’s first positive contribution saw his low cross pick out Canavan who got underneath the ball to put it well over the bar. Carvalho won a corner on the right on 67 minutes and Brighton’s cross was met by a firm downward header into the net by Langdon. Kettering kept up the pressure, but were almost caught out in the 72nd minute. Kettering’s attacking corner saw a clearance and the impressive Putman ran through the defence on the left and planted a shot just past the right post. Hall went over in the box on 74 minutes but it was not a penalty. Hayes attacked again and substitute Dylan Kearney lobbed a shot wide before Putman fired wide from the left. The last 10 minutes or so belonged to Kettering as they laid siege to the home goal. Hall got away down the left and his dangerous cross was cleared;Carvalho’s left foot shot saw Boness save well at his left post- but they did score in the 85th minute. Brighton’s corner saw Howe challenge with two defenders and as the ball looped up, the Kettering man was first to react lashing the ball into the net from close range. Kettering could have scored a third in the 90th minute as Hicks played a one/two with substitute Jordan Wilson and clear on the left he lobbed wide of the right post. Next up it’s in-form Biggleswade Town who visit Latimer Park on Saturday next.
