Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL Going a goal down and then leading 2-1 at half time, the Poppies fell away badly in the second period and, in a game which mirrored last season’s clash, they lost 3-2 to a second half penalty and late winner. THE KETTERING SQUAD Liam Gooch made his debut in place of the suspended Paul White. Jack Kelly started and Lewis Hornby reverted to the bench. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED It was of course windy - a swirling wind across the pitch, which itself was fine after scares of being unfit to play as late as Friday afternoon. Kettering started brightly and took the game to their hosts in the first 10 minutes. During that time they saw Gary Mulligan heading a James Brighton free kick straight at home keeper, Tom McHale and the keeper then taking Dom Langdon’s cross from the left. However it was the Terras who took the lead in their first meaningful attack on 14 minutes. Jordan Copp had a lot of space on the left and his cross was expertly headed in by ace marksman Stuart Fleetwood, back across goal and in at the base of the left upright. The Poppies came again and Jack Kelly’s shot across goal almost found Rene Howe at the far post. Aaron O’Connor had two shots in quick succession. The first was blocked and the second saved by McHale. The Poppies equalised in the 21st minute. Langdon’s long throw found Rene Howe who controlled, just, for Brett Solkhon to sweep the ball high past McHale. Kettering were still very positive at this stage and soon went into the lead. On 26 minutes, good play down the right saw Liam Bateman cross low and O’Connor reacted well at the near post to get the touch to send the ball across the line. Both teams then went through a spell of poor play and the game lacked any quality for 15 minutes during which time Mulligan was cautioned for a mistimed tackle on Dean Evans and Weymouth had to make two substitutions for injuries to Jake Wannell and Charlie Davis. The Terras had free kicks and corners in the last few minutes of the half and Liam Gooch flapped a little at a cross and then made an easy take from a lob into the 6 yard box. All of a sudden the game got going in the final two minutes of the half and in added time. A Kelly corner for Kettering on the right was poor- but then James Brighton’s corner from the left was met by Dom Langdon’s header. As the ball seemed to hit a defender’s arm over the line it looked a goal or a penalty- but neither Referee or Assistant seemed to see it. As the ball fell loose, James Hall’s goalbound shot was very well beaten away by McHale. Weymouth finished the extended half with a corner and free kick and the Poppies defended well. Half Time: Weymouth 1 - 2 Kettering Town The second period started more end to end as Weymouth looked to get back into the game. Gooch saved Tiago Sa’s low shot and at the other end James Hall’s cross from the right was scrambled away. Brett Solkhon was replaced by Paul Malone after only two minutes of the half. McHale saved a Canavan shot and for Weymouth Calvin Brooks’ shot was out of the ground. The Poppies then gained a free kick for a late challenge on Brighton, which went unpunished for some reason, as the wide man was going through on goal. Canavan’s shot was just over the bar. A quick Weymouth break on 56 minutes saw Gooch save a low Copp shot and then the keeper held a low effort from Sa. The equaliser came from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute. As Copp went across the area he went down as Canavan stuck a leg out. Although the wide man appeared to go down early and easily the penalty was given and Copp converted past Gooch. Within 4 minutes both Copp again and Ben Thomson went over in the box under Kettering challenges and both could have been penalties – but were not given. Canavan got a shot in which was saved, in an ever decreasing number of Kettering attacks. James Hall was replaced by Nathan Hicks with Howe and Canavan having more attacking roles. Howe carved an opening in the 73rd minute and his shot took a deflection and was marginally over the bar. The ensuing corner was cleared. The Poppies had to attack and with some tired looking players they could not make any real impression. They were indebted to keeper, Gooch, who saved Brooks low shot. The winner came for Weymouth in the 87th minute. Bateman looked to be fouled by Thomson in conceding a corner. Unfortunately the Poppies failed to cover a short corner on the left and Copp had all the time in the world to cross and skipper Stephane Zubar’s header zipped into the net. There was still time for Fleetwood to go down as he was virtually clear on goal – another penalty? – no he tripped over his own feet with only Gooch to beat. Canavan was out on his feet and was only replaced after the goal by Jorrin John, who had no time to influence the game. The Poppies now go to Leamington on Tuesday night for the re-run of the abandoned game and then entertain St Ives Town on Saturday.
