IN A NUTSHELL: It wasn’t a feast of football today as the teams battled out a goalless draw in a game that neither team did enough to win. Goal incidents were at a premium and the result leaves City still battling to avoid relegation on the final Saturday of the season and Kettering will finish 8th or 9th.

THE KETTERING SQUAD: Gary Mulligan and James Hall were unavailable. Liam Canavan ad Paul Malone are out for the season and Jorrin John was ill. Brett Solkhon returned and a four man bench saw young keeper Callum Snow named for the first time in the squad. Ben Baker kept his place and Nathan Hicks dropped to the bench.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The pitch was bone hard and controlling the ball was going to be a challenge as City kicked off towards the Station Road end. The Lillywhites won a 4th minute corner but failed to trouble Kettering keeper,Paul White. The keeper was in action three minutes later though as Oliver Snaith broke clear and White saved the shot with his legs at the expense of a corner. City forced two more corners- both fruitless-as Kettering struggled to get going. It wasn’t until the 11th minute that the Poppies threatened and Ben Baker found Aaron O’Connor on the right and he shot across Dean Snedker’s goal. A midfield battle followed for the next 15 minutes before O’Connor got the better of Jordan Gent only to poke his shot over the bar. Dan Walker’s 27th minute snapshot was straight at White and Kettering came back with Rene Howe setting up O’Connor for a shot which went wide. Despite City’s predicament in the league there seemed little urgency and with the Poppies seemingly playing out the season there was little for the decent sized crowd to get excited about. Before the break, Kettering’s Baker got past Paul Cooper but sent the cross behind goal and then created the home team’s best chance as his low cross found Howe and the goalbound shot came off a defender’s leg and flipped over the bar.

Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 0 Cambridge City

The second half started quietly as nothing much happened until the 53rd minute. James Haran crossed from the right and James Brighton’s volley beat Snedker but was hacked away from the goal line by a defender. Jack Kelly’s cross in the next attack found Rene Howe in a shooting position- but the ball ended up in someone’s garden in Station Road ! Ben Baker was still trying on the right and won a corner which was cleared. The ball was worked back and Nathan Hicks’ cross found Brett Solkhon in space with a good chance- but he headed over the bar. A decision by the Referee on 69 minutes was harsh on City as the ball was sent forward and, as two players were going clear on goal, the whistle was heard bringing the game back to the halfway line for a City free kick. It was rough luck on the visitors. Haran’s 72nd minute shot was wild and high and wide and then, at the other end, Walker broke away but fired badly wide. Kettering immediately broke away and O’Connor’s left foot shot was just over the bar. City had a couple of corners with White taking a good high ball and then saving from substitute, Lee Stevenson. Two final efforts counted for nothing as Walker’s shot was deflected away from goal for City and for Kettering, Brighton’s volley went just over he bar. Kettering’s last away match is on Saturday at Banbury United.
