Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Leamington won this game with something to spare, taking the lead on 24 minutes through Ahmed Obeng, and sealing the win with a 75th minute Ryan Rowe penalty. The Poppies’ only good spell in the game was in the first 15 minutes, and after that time they failed to trouble the visitors’ defence to any degree. To make matters worse both Ben Stephens and Liam Canavan picked up injuries. THE SQUAD: The only change from last Saturday’s game was that Liam Bateman replaced Nathan Bobowicz. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Within seconds of the start Kettering got forward and Rene Howe’s shot was collected by visiting keeper, Tony Breeden. Leamington responded with a corner and Jack Edwards headed over. Kettering were looking lively and on 9 minutes, Howe set up strike partner, Spencer Weir-Daley. Weir-Daley turned and shot but Breeden was well positioned to save. A couple of minutes on and home keeper, Paul Walker, just kept out an excellent Rob Thompson-Brown free kick- pushing the shot onto the bar. Leamington were now well in the game and taking control of midfield, and they opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The ball was played through down the left, and with the goalkeeper and defenders looking at each other, Ahmed Obeng chased the ball down, cut inside and his low right foot shot beat Walker at his right post. The Poppies had a brief spell, which saw some pressure, resulting in a Liam Canavan shot being blocked – but soon Obeng was threatening again and James Haran got in a great tackle. The final effort of the half saw Breeden save easily from Ben Stephens. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 1 Leamington With Ben Stephens not re-appearing for the second half,on came Dom Langdon and within a couple of minutes, Liam Canavan hobbled off to be replaced by Sam Smith. Thompson- Brown’s 25 yard shot beat Walker but cannoned off the crossbar and the same player then fired just over. Kettering had a chance on 62 minutes, but, uncharacteristically, James Brighton’s free kick was wide. Within minutes Obeng should have scored his second goal after having pounced on another loose ball- but amazingly he fired wide of goal from a few yards out. For Kettering, Brighton’s speculative low shot was an easy Breeden save. Again Leamington had a great chance to score on 71 minutes as ex Poppy, Courtney Baker-Richardson, crossed and Ryan Rowe headed over when very well placed. Two minutes later, Walker made a great stop from Thompson-Brown from close in. Leamington did double their lead on 75 minutes when the slightest of touches saw Obeng go down under James Haran’s challenge, and Rowe smashed home the penalty. The Poppies tried to find away through the visiting defence, playing with three up and three at the back but all they could muster was a Nathan Hicks shot- which went wide. Finally skipper, Brett Solkhon, was penalised for a hand ball as Weir-Daley got the ball in the net.
