Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL:

First half goals from Wilson Carvalho and Spencer Weir-Daley were enough to see the Poppies win this tie-although Alex Reid pulled a goal back just before the hour mark. Kettering controlled the first half and Rushall tried gamely in the second period – but visiting keeper Paul White stood firm when needed.

THE KETTERING SQUAD:

With all players reporting fit from Tuesday’s game at St Neots, the starting 11 was unchanged. With 7 substitutes allowed, both Jordan Wilson and Aaron O’Connor joined the bench.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED:

A nice playing surface welcomed the players to Dales Lane today- and it wasn’t raining!

Rushall leading scorer,Alex Reid, featured early on as,firstly, Paul White was out to clear from him and then James Haran had to cut out a dangerous Reid cross on the left.

Kettering scored with their first real attack. A swift one-two between Wilson Carvalho and Spencer Weir-Daley saw Carvalho expertly finish with a low right foot shot just inside the right post.

Reid soon was in action again as he ran onto a ball down the right but he stabbed the ball over the bar.

The Poppies had a chance on 20 minutes as Brett Solkhon met a free kick- but his downward header was easy for home keeper,Jose Veiga.

White was down to safely hold a low Luke Bottomer cross. Then Kettering could have scored again as Weir-Daley had a great chance- but he pushed the ball wide of the left upright from a few yards out.

Reid headed over a 33rd minute free kick and in the next minute, James Haran got in a telling block as the ball fell nicely for a home shot.

Veiga was then down to smother a Nathan Hicks low cross.

The Poppies doubled their lead in the 40th minute. The ball was won in midfield and James Brighton sent a lovely ball through for Weir-Daley to run on, and his low left foot shot beat Veiga at his near post.

White made a good take from a home free kick just before the break as Kettering went in leading 2-0.

Half Time:

Rushall Olympic 0 - 2 Kettering Town

The Pics replaced Marlon Walters with Mikael Partodikromo at the start of the half.

A couple of minutes into the half Rene Howe’s cheeky back-heel set up James Brighton and Veiga made the save tipping the ball over the bar.

Rushall replied and Partodikromo’s shot was well covered by White. A few minutes later the Referee got in the way of a Kettering clearance and the visitors were forced to concede an unnecessary free kick as the ball approached the penalty area. Fortunately for the Official the ball was cleared.

The home side pulled a goal back in the 58th minute. Kettering were caught out by a quick free kick on the left, and Martin’s cross was headed down and in at the near post by Reid, giving White no chance.

This gave hope to Rushall and it was not long before Reid was in the action again as he glanced a header wide from a cross from the right. White then saved Martin’s volley.

Howe got in a decent cross for Kettering on 70 minutes but there was no other forward there to convert.

White then saved a low shot from substitute, Stan Mugisha.

All six substitutes were on the field by 77 minutes as both sides fought for the game.

Kettering’s Kaid Mohammed fired wide in the 84th minute and Aaron O’Connor’s shot was straight at Veiga.

The Pics tried to get the equaliser and on 87 minutes White made a great double save from Martin, who had a clear chance and then from a fellow attacker who volleyed the follow up. White saved from Mugisha and Martin in quick succession and then dominated his six yard box to take a final threatening cross.

Kettering now go into Monday’s draw for the third round qualifying on 1st October, and will play in the Hillier Cup on Tuesday at home to AFC Rushden and Diamonds (7.45pm)
