Match Report

Match Sponsors : SYSDOC UK LIMITED IN A NUTSHELL: The Kettering supporters in the meagre crowd tonight saw a determined performance from the Poppies against a strong Brackley side. James Hall’s strike on the hour sets up the final with Corby Town on 11th April at Sixfields. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Paul White returned after suspension. Liam Canavan was serving the second and last game of his ban. Jack O’Connor and Jorrin John started and with Gary Mulligan, Aaron O’Connor and Lewis Hornby all injured, Ben Baker,Bleu McNeil and Ethan Lee joined Jack Kelly and Liam Gooch on the bench. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Brackley’s squad was strong with 13 of the players included from the 16 named for last Saturday’s defeat to Salford City. Included were former Kettering players Laurie Walker, James Clifton and David Moyo. Walker was in action after two minutes as he saved brilliantly from James Brighton’s goalbound header. A couple of minutes later, Nathan Hicks lobbed a shot over from 18 yards. Brackley’s passing was slick though and they began to keep possession well with Matt Lowe firing their first chance wide. The next chance saw Lewis Rankin shoot wide of the left upright. As Brackley came well into the game, Gareth Dean headed wide from a corner and White got down well to his left to save from Lowe. Goalmouth action was at a premium though and as Kettering began to hold on to the ball they started to get forward. A 32nd minute Brighton corner was headed wide at the back post by Jack O’Connor. As the half came to a close, Rene Howe showed good skill but his shot was very well blocked. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 0 Brackley Town Kettering suffered a setback on 48 minutes as James Haran had to go off with a knee injury after colliding with Liam Bateman. With Brett Solkhon also hobbling it was looking ominous for the Poppies. Ben Baker came on with Brighton reverting to defence. Lowe fired wide again for Brackley and on 58 minutes Kettering carved out a good chance, but Hicks fired wide from a decent central position. The Poppies scored what was to be the deciding goal on the hour. It was a great move, started by Rene Howe, who squeezed the ball down the right channel to Hicks. Hicks’ turn took him past the defender and the low cross found James Hall. His first shot came off Ben Baker but there was no mistake with the rebound as his high shot into the net gave Walker no chance. Brackley responded by bringing on James Armson and Glenn Walker. Lee Ndlovu poked a shot wide and Brighton made a vital interception to prevent a shot at the expense of a corner. The visitors were throwing men forward to get a goal, leaving gaps at the back, and a Poppies one-two with Baker and Hicks saw Hicks’ shot go wide. The Poppies really battled as Brackley attacked with the home defence holding out really well. Armson had two chances- both well off target and Paul White only had one save to make with Dom Langdon also getting in an excellent saving block as the Poppies saw the game out after 5 minutes of added time. The win sets up the final at Sixfields on Tuesday 11th April against Corby Town, whose Manager and ex Poppy, Gary Mills was at the game tonight. Kettering now face two away league games at Frome his Saturday and Cinderford the following Saturday.
