Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Barwell won this pre season game with three second half goals, after a fairly even first half. Kettering changed virtually the whole team during the second period. The goals came from Ryan Robbins on 49 minutes,Craig Stanley (60) and substitute James Daley (75).Unfortunately for Kettering, Rene Howe saw red with just three minutes to go and faces a three match ban at the start of the season. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Durrell Berry started at right back, and with Dom Langdon out with a dead leg, and Gary Mulligan on holiday, Ben Toseland was asked to cover in central defence with Brett Solkhon. Michael Richens started with Nathan Hicks amongst the substitutes. Aaron O’Connor was rested. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Barwell opened up the better of the teams and both Ryan Robbins and Zeph Thomas wasted early half chances. Lindon Meikle had the first two chances for Kettering with a low shot from the right, saved by Liam Castle, and a left foot effort hooked over the bar. The first real good chance fell to Rene Howe, who headed wide from a James Brighton corner. Ben Milnes’ 22nd minute free kick was just over the bar and Michael Richens then fired wide as Kettering began to control the game. At the other end Robbins left foot shot drifted just wide as he looked the major threat for Barwell. Rhys Hoenes was causing a lot of trouble for the visitors with his pace and was being dealt with by some tough tackling, winning a number of free kicks. One such tackle as he went in on goal on 28 minutes saw shouts for a penalty waived away by the Referee. The Referee came in for some criticism from both sides as he also denied Barwell a penalty for a challenge on Robbins, and then for awarding a goal kick, as Castle fumbled a save from Richens shot, and was relieved to see the ball go just wide as a goal kick was given. Barwell had a little spell before the break as Owen Story fired well wide and Thomas’ shot was just wide of the target. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 0 Barwell Marcus Law made immediate changes at the start of the half and by 50 minutes half the outfield players had been changed. Barwell took the lead on 49 minutes with Story’s cross from the right headed in by an unmarked Robbins. Robbins then shot over the bar from an Eddie Nisevic cross. Paul White was then forced to save with his legs from visiting substitute, Ross Haig, who was clear on goal on the left. Barwell went two goals up from a corner on the left - Craig Stanley putting a looping header over White from the back post. Rene Howe was niggling all the time and getting involved with the opposing players, putting in a few tasty challenges- but he combined with Hoenes and Nathan Hicks to almost force a goal as Barwell hastily cleared away from their line. The third goal came from a great move out of the keeper’s hands and without a Kettering player getting a touch. A move involving four players saw James Daley fire past White to complete the scoring. The Poppies best efforts saw Howe hit the post with a header and substitute George Boeland fire over the bar. Howe, who had been warned for his behaviour by the Referee, then inexplicably went through on a defender and received a straight red card.
