Match Report

TODAY’S MATCH SPONSOR: ESSITY IN A NUTSHELL: The Poppies recorded their biggest win of the season in front of their largest home crowd to date as they put the Martyrs to the sword in a 5-0 win. In essence it was a very good performance, and although the visitors may have believed the game was tighter than the score line suggests, they were, in the end, well beaten. Kettering’s goals came from Matty Stevens with two in the first half, amd Aaron O’Connor,Gary Stohrer and Ben Toseland in the second half. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Jordan Wright replaced the suspended Paul White in goal. Marshall Willock, signed yesterday on loan, came in for Brett Solkhon and Matty Stevens replaced Rene Howe who was ill. Solkhon was on the bench as was James Brighton, but Liam Bateman was not in the squad. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The earlier sunshine had disappeared as the cloud, and eventually rain, came to Latimer Park’s blustery conditions. A large crowd saw Kettering attacking the Morrisons end and they forced a couple of early corners. The first was cleared and the second, from the right, cleared everyone. Lindon Meikle retrieved the ball and crossed low where, firstly a visiting defender missed the ball, as did debutant, Marshall Willock, who had a decent shooting chance. Merthyr then forced a corner which was easily cleared. Then Kettering’s Aaron O’Connor and Ben Milnes forced successive corners. The first was easily cleared but the second saw Willock at the far post with a great chance to score- but he headed wide when unchallenged. On 18 minutes Kettering’s O’Connor lobbed a shot in but visiting keeper, Oliver Davies had an easy catch. Davies was beaten, however, six minutes later as Matty Stevens guided Ben Toseland’s free kick, from the right, into the net with a downward header. Within a couple of minutes, Merthyr had their best chance to date as Ashley Evans headed over from a central position. Kettering countered and Rhys Hoenes had a mazy run at the defence and his cross was blocked out. The visitors had a decent spell of possession, knocking the ball about and home keeper, Jordan Wright, saved Mo Touray’s 43rd minute left foot shot. Within a minute Kettering went two up. A free kick rebounded to Ben Milnes and his low shot was deflected by Stevens and with Davies wrong footed the ball zipped into the net. Half Time: Kettering Town 2 - 0 Merthyr Town The Poppies forced an early corner, which saw a clearance and a quick break for the visitors. Fortunately, Durrell Berry dispossessed danger man Ian Traylor to prevent the chance. Merthyr forced a corner on the right and from the clearance, the cross came in for Touray to head goalwards but it was an easy take for Wright. Both teams were playing decent stuff at this stage and in no way were Merthyr without hope of getting a goal back. Kettering were a little more penetrating in their attacks, however, and Milnes’ cross almost found Stevens at the far post as the Merthyr defence scrambled away. Martyrs’ keeper, Davies, excelled on 61 minutes as he saved well from Stevens and then made a great stop with his legs on O’Connor’s follow up. On 63 minutes, though, it was 3-0. A misjudged defensive header saw Stevens clear on the left and his delightful low cross was expertly finished by O’Connor, as he placed the ball past Davies and in, low, at the left upright. Corey Jenkins had been on the pitch as a substitute for just two minutes and he had a great chance to pull a goal back – but meeting Traylor’s cross from the right, he headed wide. On 73 minutes Kettering threatened again as both Stevens and O’Connor saw successive shots blocked. Kettering substitute, Gary Stohrer, on for Milnes, made a pretty quick impact as he scored Kettering’s fourth goal in the 79th minute. Running on to a through ball down the right he rounded Oliver Davies and steered the ball in from a tight angle. It got better for Kettering three minutes later as Toseland’s free kick on the right skewed off a defender’s boot and went past Davies’ left to make it 5-0. The final effort of the game saw Michael Richens fire over the bar. Next up it’s away at Biggleswade on Tuesday evening for another league game, followed by a trip to Nantwich next Saturday in the Emirates F A Cup.
