Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Despite having the major share of possession, the Poppies had to settle for a point at Biggleswade tonight. The Waders defended very well and Kettering’s cause was not helped by a penalty miss in the 26th minute and some debatable major decisions. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Brett Solkhon returned with Gary Mulligan reverting to the bench. Ben Milnes (calf) and Liam Bateman (hamstring) were absent. Gary Stohrer started and Paul White was on the bench after suspension with Ben Baker not in the squad. The Teams lined up: BIGGLESWADE TOWN: 1 Liam Gooch 2 Tyler Walker 3 Lucas Perry 4 Reece Fielding 5 Nathan Hicks (14 Daniel Jarvis,79) 6 Gavin Hoyte 7 Craig Daniel (Captain) 8 Connor Hall 9 George Bailey 10 Robbie Parker 11 Graeme Montgomery (16 Jack Bowen,60) Unused Substitutes: 12 Charlie Hayford 15 Hugh Alban-Jones 17 Taish Griffiths Yellow Cards: Daniel,26:Hoyte,57;Hall,62;Parker,83. KETTERING TOWN: 1 Jordan Wright 2 Durrell Berry 3 Ben Toseland 4 Marshall Willock 5 Brett Solkhon (Captain) 6 Michael Richens 7 Rhys Hoenes 8 Aaron O’Connor (15 Rene Howe,65) 9 Ben Stevens 10 Gary Stohrer 11 Lindon Meikle (12 James Brighton,62) Unused Substitutes: 14 Gary Mulligan 16 Munashe Sundire 17 Paul White Yellow Cards: Richens,16;O’Connor,40;Berry,76. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Graeme Montgomery’s 4th minute shot for the Waders was held by Jordan Wright at the second attempt. Kettering started slowly and their first incisive move saw Lindon Meikle’s cross go high over the bar. Wright was called on again on 11 minutes as he collected Connor Hall’s low left foot shot. Michael Richens was yellow carded on 16 minutes as he appeared to win the ball from Hall and, in the next minute, Richens fired over the bar as Liam Gooch parried a Rhys Hoenes cross/shot. Gradually the Poppies began to gain control of the match and put the home defence under pressure. Ben Stevens’ 20th minute header was palmer away by Gooch as Hoenes appeared on the left to cross. From the corner Hoenes’ shot was blocked and the rebound was scrambled away. Kettering were awarded a penalty on 26 minutes. Stevens broke on the right and crossed for Aaron O’Connor who was the subject of a heavy challenge from Craig Daniel as he shaped to shoot. Under current laws Daniel was only yellow carded and a penalty ensued. Ex Waders man, Rhys Hoenes saw his penalty saved and Gooch got to the follow up to make an excellent double save. Gooch was soon in action again as he was off his line to smother from Hoenes as the wide man honed in on goal. Four minutes later, Stevens had a decent chance to turn and shoot and the defence blocked. A now rare Biggleswade corner saw the ball cleared and the cross back in from the right found Gavin Hoyte at the far post but the header was wide of target. Soon, at the other end, good feet from O’Connor created a shot and his left foot screamer was just wide. There was controversy on 40 minutes as O’Connor was yellow carded. As he went through to shoot he appeared to be tripped. There was no reason to go down as he had only the keeper to beat- but the Referee deemed simulation rather than a second penalty. The Poppies had two appeals for handball in the penalty area turned down before Stevens headed just over from Ben Toseland cross. Half Time: BIGGLESWADE TOWN 0 - 0 KETTERING TOWN The Second half was to be all Kettering, as Biggleswade were penned in their own half for long periods. O’Connor saw his 46th minute shot deflected wide and on 47 minutes Stevens’shot was blocked out and O’Connor fired wide from the rebound. Gary Stohrer was having a good game and his effort from Meikle’s cross forced yet another corner as Kettering looked for the opening goal. A Richens free kick saw another corner conceded which was punched away by Gooch. James Brighton and Rene Howe entered the fray replacing Meikle and O’Connor and Kettering continued to press with the home defence standing strong. A 64th minute throw into the 6 yard box was headed on by Marhall Willock and as Brett Solkhon attempted a header on goal the ball struck an outstretched arm (as subsequent photos proved)- and again no second penalty. Further Kettering pressure saw Solkhon head wide and Brighton’s free kick saved by Gooch. Richens free kick was then blocked and another handball in the box by a defender was ignored by the Referee and Assistant. Biggleswade rallied and their defence was standing strong, albeit they could not bring Jordan Wright into the game as he was a virtual spectator. The Poppies final flurries saw Stohrer unable to get any power behind a shot,Gooch saving a Stevens header and Willock heading wide from Brighton’s corner. Next up it’s Nantwich away on Saturday in the Emirates F A Cup 4th round qualifying.
