Match Report

TONIGHT’S MATCH SPONSOR: FIXAUTO KETTERING TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME SPONSORS: CARLA AND WAYNE SHARPE TONIGHT’S MASCOT: DAMIEN CHESTER IN BRIEF: Just how the Poppies were only 1-0 down at half time is a mystery with Royston failing to add to a 2nd minute goal from Adam Murray, despite having a number of really good chances. The Crows were made to pay as Kettering rattled in four second half goals through Brett Solkhon (52 minutes), Matty Stevens (58),Aaron O’Connor (61) and Lindon Meikle (91). Royston’s Sam Corcoran was red carded in the 54th minute. THE KETTERING SQUAD: The team from Saturday was unchanged. Wilson Carvalho, back at the club, was on the bench in place of Tom Marshall who is still suffering with a virus. THE TEAMS: Kettering Town: 1 Paul White 2 Kalern Thomas (12 Liam Bateman,73) 3 Ben Toseland 4 Brett Solkhon (Captain) 5 Gary Mulligan 6 Orrin Pendley 7 Lindon Meikle 8 Aaron O’Connor 11 Rhys Hoenes (14 Gary Stohrer,81) 15 Matthew Stevens 18 Michael Richens (10 Ben Milnes,69) Unused Substitutes: 9 Rene Howe 17 Wilson Carvalho Yellow cards: O’Connor,51;Toseland,88. Red Card: Corcoran,54. THE GAME: The pitch had dried out very well after the recent bad weather. Royston sprang a surprise, as, with John Frendo still out suspended, centre back,Adam Murray, was played up top. This proved as great success, as, with just two minutes gone, he pounced on a poor back header by Gary Mulligan and prodded the ball past Paul White to put the visitors in front. Three minutes later, Murray rose to meet a ball from the left and headed just wide. Kettering forced a couple of corners, and from the second, Michael Richens shot from 6 yards was charged down. Royston almost scored again on 11 minutes as the Kettering defence disappeared, Adam Marriott headed on and Scott Bridges fired against the outside of the right post. For Kettering, Kalern Thomas was getting in advanced positions on the right and one low cross was well taken by the diving Josh Tibbetts. Royston could have scored again, as leading scorer Marriott fired a looping shot just over the bar. Marriott then cleverly set up Rohdell Gordon on the right. His low shot was well saved by White and Orrin Pendley hooked away the loose ball. Royston’s Lee Chappell was yellow carded for a foul and kick out at Rhys Hoenes in the 24th minute and may have been lucky to escape a sending off. Richens had a promising run for Kettering but the finish was poor. On the half the Poppies did find some real pressure with Aaron O’Connor’s shot cleared away from the line and Ben Toseland’s follow up shot well saved by Tibbetts. Kettering had a little spell with Matty Stevens heading a Lindon Meikle cross wide, and Brett Solkhon skewing a right foot effort behind the net. Adam Murray then had a great chance again- but his shot went the wrong side of the left post. Another good effort, this time from Sam Corcoran, saw his measured shot skim the crossbar. As the half wrapped up, Royston went in rightly in front. Half Time: Kettering Town 0 - 1 Royston Town The visitors started off well again and Gordon might have done better with a shot as White easily picked up. Kettering began to get up a head of steam and had clearly had a talking to at the break. Richens’ free kick was poor though and in the next Kettering attack, Chappell almost beat his own keeper, deflecting a cross, with Tibbetts saving well. From the corner Kettering equalised.Toseland’s cross from the left was firmly headed in by Solkhon. Royston were down to 10 men in the 54th minute as Corcoran was dismissed by a high tackle on Kettering’s Richens. And the news was bad for them four minutes later. Toseland advanced down the left and his cross fell nicely for Hoenes- who mis-kicked the volley. In the right place was Stevens who made contact and deceived the three defenders trying to clear, as the ball dropped behind the line in the scramble. Kettering were now rampant and Kalern Thomas galloped down the right, got clear, and Tibbetts made a fine save. The corner was cleared off the line by a now overworked Royston defence and Richens’ follow up shot was blocked. It was 3-1 on 61 minutes. Toseland’s deep free kick from the left was skilfully and firmly headed in at the back post by O’Connor. Both teams made substitutions and with only 10 men Royston’s Murray was dropped back into defence. As the tempo of the game diminished the ball was stuck in midfield for long spells. Toseland was finding room on the left now regularly and Pendley headed one of his crosses wide. Then Meikle’s shot was poor after another Toseland cross. In the final minutes, Stevens made himself a great chance but he skied the ball over the bar. The fourth Kettering goal, just into added time, saw Meikle’s low 20 yarder skid past Tibbetts and in at the left upright. A fine second half performance gained this important win for the Poppies. On Saturday we are at home to Frome Town, followed by Dorchester at home next Tuesday and Weymouth at home on Saturday 31st.
