Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: The Poppies played out their third successive league goalless draw in a keenly contested match at Redditch tonight. Kettering keeper Paul White was just the busier goalkeeper, and as the scoreline suggests, defences dominated. In essence, the Poppies gained a point away to a top six side, and 4 points out of 6 against Redditch- which is a good return. THE KETTERING SQUAD: There were unenforced changes as James Brighton, Marshall Willock,Matthew Stevens and Rhys Hoenes started with Rene Howe, Lindon Meikle, Ben Milnes and Ben Toseland dropping to the bench. Brett Solkhon started in midfield. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: The all weather surface had had rain most of the day and during the game the rain drove across the ground- but the surface was very good. Ketterings Matty Stevens chased an early through ball but home keeper, Ethan Ross was out of his area to clear. Redditchs first attempt was a shot from Pauly Apostolopoulos, which saw Kettering keeper, Paul White, make a very good save. There was a great chance for league leading scorer, Dior Angus in just the 7th minute. He was put clear down the left but his angled drive went wide of the right post. White was soon called to action again in the 12th minute when he saved from Angus. For Kettering, Stevens dragged his left foot shot well wide and Redditch replied with an Apostolopoulos shot which went into the side netting- and as it was from a good opening the player may have done better. As the game flowed from end to end, Stevens downward header from Gary Stohrers cross bounced into the arms of Ross and Aaron OConnor shot wide after Michael Richens won the header from a free kick. Redditch were looking good in midfield, with men finding space, but the Kettering defence was largely solid. On 22 minutes, James Brightons free kick was superbly saved by Ross, diving low to his right with a strong hand keeping the ball out. Durrell Berry set up a chance for Stevens on 28 minutes- but the low shot was past the left upright. James Brightons deep cross from the left saw Gary Stohrers looping header taken by Ross. It was then Whites turn to excel as he saved Zaqib Hussains shot, diving to his left. The final effort of the half saw home central defender, Orrin Pendley head wide from a corner. Half Time REDDITCH UNITED 0 - 0 KETTERING TOWN The Poppies started the second period brightly and Solkhons header from Berrys cross was taken low down by Ross. Then a Kettering corner from the right saw Gary Mulligans header punched away by Ross. Rhys Hoenes miscued his shot well wide and at the other end, Mulligan made a timely interception to snuff out danger from a low cross. White was soon called into action as he saved again from Hussain. Redditch had a couple of corners after some pressure on the away goal but both were comfortably cleared. Gary Stohrer won the ball 30 yards out in the 62nd minute and running through his tame shot went wide. Soon White was called on again as he saved well from Danico Johnson. The game see-sawed with Kettering bringing on Ben Milnes for Solkhon, Rene Howe for Stohrer and finally Lindon Meikle for Hoenes. Howe had a great chance on 69 minutes as the ball was laid back to him- but leaning back he fired just over the bar. White again was called on to save an Andi Thanoj low shot as the game entered the final 20 minutes. The otherwise quiet Aaron OConnor created a chance for himself on 78 minutes as he came in from the right and his left foot drive zipped just over the bar. A minute later, Howe created a chance and saw his shot blocked and, from the rebound, OConnor fired a low shot which cannoned off Ross legs. Ben Milnes drove the loose ball high over the bar. Dior Angus got in a neat turn and shot on 82 minutes but the strike was well wide. The teams exchanged corners, with Marshall Willock heading down and wide from Ketterings and Redditch saw their effort cleared. Ketterings final effort of the night saw Milnes run on after winning the ball- but the shot was well over the goal. Of the two teams, Redditch finished the better, as Gary Mulligan became the fifth Kettering player to be yellow carded in what was a competitive but never nasty game. After a Redditch free kick into the six yard box there was a melee and Richens cleared the danger and a 93rd minute corner for Redditch was well dealt with.A final Kettering free kick into the Redditch penalty area was easily cleared. Its F A Trophy time on Saturday as the Poppies head north to Leek Town for a 3pm kick-off.
