Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Kettering lost their second league game of the season and suffered their biggest defeat at the same time today at Dorchester. The Poppies were soon 2-0 down, conceding to Billy Lowes on 8 minutes and Sam Lanahan in the 15th minute. Rene Howe pulled a goal back on 67 minutes but Dorchester scored again a minute later through David Jerrard to restore the 2 goal advantage. Kettering substitute Marshall Willock was then sent off within two minutes of going on the pitch and Mohammad Baghdadi added a fourth goal with 12 minutes to go. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Aaron O’Connor returned after suspension and Liam Bateman replaced the injured Durrell Berry. Gary Stohrer was in for the suspended Michael Richens and James Brighton was out injured. On the bench were two under 21 players yet to make a league start in Dan Camacho and Callum Snow. It was clear that the home side were going to rely on the quick break and it paid dividends in just the 8th minute. The Kettering defence disappeared as Billy Howes ran on to a through ball and stroked the ball high past the stranded Paul White for a clinical finish. Kettering came forward and Gary Mulligan’s header from a corner was taken by experienced ex Yeovil keeper, Chris Weale.Weale was solid at set pieces taking crosses and corners cleanly as Kettering looked for a way back into the game. It got worse for Kettering on 15 minutes.Brett Solkhon, facing his own goal and under no great pressure, handled the ball and conceded a penalty. Paul White pushed Sam Lanahan’s penalty against the post but the ball fell kindly for the striker to score from the rebound. Kettering were shell shocked and took some time to get to grips with the deficit. Rhys Hoenes went on a good run and only great defending by Ross Carmichael stopped a goal attempt. Weale remained in control in the penalty area and snuffed out corners and crosses with the Poppies not really making much impression with Rene Howe unusually out of the game for long spells. Kettering finally began to exert some real pressure as the half came to a close. Carmichael got in a saving header from a Rhys Hoenes goal bound shot at the expense of a corner. From the restart Mulligan headed over. Lindon Meikle fired over from a good chance before the Dorchester goal had a remarkable escape. Aaron O’Connor’s shot was scrambled off the line and the rebound fell to Gary Stohrer and his shot was deflected off the line onto the post and hacked away by a defender. Half Time DORCHESTER TOWN 2 - 0 KETTERING TOWN The Poppies had to come forward at the start of the half and as they attacked, there were going to be gaps at the back. A poor Liam Bateman pass set up a counter attack and Ben Toseland was yellow carded for a foul on the lively Mohammad Baghdadi. The Poppies strove for the goal. Howe’s shot was deflected for a corner, Toseland saw his shot blocked and O’Connor’s effort on the left was also deflected past the post. With so many men forward and only playing three at the back, there were going to be openings for the Magpies and Baghdadi’s 52nd minute shot was blocked by Bateman. Home substitute, Blake Davies put a shot wide. The Poppies then missed a great chance as Solkhon poked wide from an opening created by Meikle. Solkhon, pushed forward from defence, then glanced a header wide from Toseland’s cross. Matty Stevens had replaced Gary Stohrer to join the forwards and Weale made a great last ditch save on 63 minutes as the loanee’s shot looked a certain goal. In the next minute Baghdadi again created a shooting chance for himself- but shot wide. The Kettering pressure paid off in the 67th minute. A corner was cleared to Mulligan, who played the ball into the box for Howe to sweep in past the diving Weale. The Kettering formation was left alone following the goal and it cost them dearly in the next minute. The ball found David Jerrard totally unmarked in the penalty area on the right side and with no challenge coming in he drilled the ball across White and in at the left post. Baghdadi fired wide again on 71 minutes and Marshall Willock came on for Toseland a minute later. Two minutes later, Willock was back in the changing rooms after a tackle on the halfway line – adjudged by the Referee to be reckless. The 10 men then conceded a 4th goal as Baghdadi, unchallenged, finally got one on target, beating White low to his left. With the game now out of sight, Kettering did create a couple of late chances as O’Connor’s shot was saved by Weale and Stevens drilled the loose ball wide. It’s now Hillier Cup Quarter final time at Daventry on Tuesday night and then, finally…..a home game next Saturday when Gosport Borough are the visitors (3pm). Full Time: DORCHESTER TOWN 4 - 1 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 410 (Poppies fans estimated at 75)
