Match Report

IN BRIEF: Kettering were behind twice, to goals from George Miller (14th minute) and Jake Jackson (78th minute) with Aaron OConnor equalisng twice in the 35th and 79th minutes. Both keepers played well with Ketterings Paul White making a couple of good saves in the first half- but Fromes Kyle Phillips rightly was awarded man of the match as he denied the visitors many times in the second half. How Kettering did not win only those there will know. THE KETTERING SQUAD: With Brett Solkhon not fully fit, Tom Marshall made his debut. Both Ben Baker and Ben Milnes came onto the bench. Rene Howe got the nod in front of Matty Stevens. The early exchanges were decent as both sides looked to play football. Ketterings Lindon Meikle came in from the left and saw his shot blocked and Fromes Jon Davies blasted a shot high over and then his cross cum shot from the right skidded along the six yard box and out for goal kick. The imposing figure of Tom Marshall alongside Gary Mulligan gave Kettering a look of solidity, but keeper Paul White was forced into a dramatic double save on 13 minutes. He dived to parry Davies shot off the left upright and did very well to save Jake Jacksons follow up shot at the same post. The Robins took the lead in the next minute. An unnecessary free kick saw Chas Hemmings cross met at the far post by George Miller whose header glanced past White and in at the right post. Hemmings then had space to shoot- but the effort was wide. Kettering got forward and keeper, Kyle Phillips denied Aaron OConnor as, one on one, the strikers low shot cannoned off the keepers legs. Soon White was called on at the other end as he dived to his right to save from Davies. As the teams exchanged goal attempts, Rhys Hoenes saw his shot deflected for a corner and White saved comfortably from George Miller. It was a good spectacle for the neutral as the game was pretty open and Hemmings fired over the bar before Kettering equalised. Liam Bateman featured in a couple of one-twos and Rene Howe got a touch to send OConnor clear to fire inside the left upright. Kettering took some control and Hoenes set up Gary Stohrer and the shot was blocked out. Phillips was sharply of his line to gather as OConnor closed in on a chance. Finally in the half, after yet another Frome free kick, Hemmings poked a shot straight at White. Half Time FROME TOWN 1 - 1 KETTERING TOWN The second half was slower to get going, but on the break Kettering nearly scored on 53 minutes. A swift break saw OConnor set up Hoenes with a clear chance which he fluffed and as the ball ran loose Gary Stohrer saw his low on-target shot blocked very well by a defenders lunge. For Frome, Darren Jeffries shot well wide and White comfortably saved Jacksons header. Home keeper Phillips excelled on 61 minutes as he somehow palmed Ben Toselands pile-driver onto the bar and over for a corner. He was soon in action again as he cut out OConnors dangerous cross from the right. On 67 minutes he made an excellent save from OConnors shot and then on a rare break Fromes Jackson just could not get to Davies low cross from the right. The Poppies then created another great chance as good work by OConnor on the right set up Stohrer but he fired narrowly over the bar. The Poppies were caught out though on 78 minutes. Davies, again on the right was allowed to progress despite what looked like a foul in the centre circle by one of his teammates and his low cross was, this time, swept home by Jackson. Within a minute it was 2-2. Kettering won a corner on the left and substitute Ben Milnes delivery allowed OConnor to head in from a few yards. Kettering now had the momentum. Substitute, Matty Stevens got away down the right and the effort was either a shot or cross- but it missed the goal and his teammates. Stevens was felled just inside the penalty area on 82 minutes but the Referee waived away penalty shouts. Then Stevens, on the right, could just not get to Milnes low cross from the left. Phillips was out to cut out a Toseland cross as Kettering poured forward. With four minutes to go Kettering had a glorious chance to score. Stevens broke clear down the middle and with only Phillips to beat, saw the keeper make an excellent stop. Frome then had a chance as they forced a rare corner. White saved from Jackson and from the corner,Richens deflected another header over the bar. The Poppies went for it in added time. Milnes shot was blocked as defenders threw themselves into the line of fire. Milnes had a shot which just cleared the bar and Stevens really had a good shout for a penalty as he was upended. Landing on the ball, he attempted to get back on his feet with the ball in between his legs- and the Referee awarded a free kick to Frome! The Poppies now have three home games. St Ives visit on Tuesday, Stratford on Saturday and Royston on Tuesday 12th. Full Time: FROME TOWN 2 - 2 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 267 (Poppies fans estimated at 70) Poppies man of the Match: Aaron OConnor
