Match Report

IN BRIEF: A bitterly cold day with a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch set the scene for the teams today- and it was the Poppies who dealt better with the conditions. Brett Solkhon converted a 13th minute penalty as the visitors went in at half time in the lead against the wind. The second half saw decisive strikes from Michael Richens (58 minutes),Matty Stevens (61) and Aaron O’Connor (88) to record a comprehensive 4-0 win. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Michael Richens started as Tom Marshall was adversely affected by a virus. Ben Milnes came back into the squad as a substitute after injury. . Very early on it was clear that the players were going to struggle badly with the arctic conditions and the very strong wind. Control and judging the flight of the ball caught out most players as the two teams battled the weather. In just the second minute, Kettering keeper,Paul White was out to punch away a free kick from former Kettering player, Ben Stephens. Kettering’s first attempt came from leading scorer Aaron O’Connor in the 7th minute when he pounced on a loose ball and home keeper, Louis Connor, made a sharp save and from the rebound, Kalern Thomas’ shot was blocked out. The Poppies took the lead from the penalty spot in the 13th minute. A free kick saw Matty Stevens getting to the ball just before Connor and the keeper’s intrusion saw a penalty award. Solkhon stepped up to fire in and Connor was carded for dissent. The Town, with wind advantage, were having plenty of territorial possession and a number of corners were forced against a packed Kettering defence. The nearest they came to a goal attempt was a shot from skipper, James Fry, who fired well over the bar. Kettering got forward again on 32 minutes as Rhys Hoenes raced clear. He rounded Connor but was forced wide on the right and the chance was gone as the defence rallied. O’Connor then got away on the left and his low cross flashed across the six yard box and away from danger. Hoenes forced another save from Connor as he advanced on the right and the keeper did well to parry the vicious shot. Stratford had another goal attempt as Andy Gallinagh fired over the bar and the half came to an end. Half Time STRATFORD TOWN 0 - 1 KETTERING TOWN Kettering took some control at the start of the half, with Solkhon moving into midfield- but at this stage Stratford were, in no way, out of the game. Their short passing saw some neat moves and Kalern Thomas got in a telling block on a Lee Thomas shot on the left. The nearest Stratford came was a 50th minute Stephens free kick which White did well to get down to low to his right to push away. Richens fired wide for Kettering and for Stratford Stephens headed wide from a Will Grocott free kick. The Poppies doubled their lead in the 59th minute. Richens took a pass from the right and hit an unstoppable left foot drive into the top left hand corner, giving Connor no chance. Richens was soon in defensive action, as a minute later, he got in an important challenge on Eli Bako as the wide man had a great shooting chance- which drifted wide of the right post. Within another minute, O’Connor’s right foot volley from a corner went wide. From the goal kick the ball was worked back into the Stratford half and a poor pass saw O’Connor claim the ball. He sent Matty Stevens down the right and from a tight angle the shot beat Connor and again flew in at the top left hand corner to make it 3-0. White then had to make a save from Grocott- who may have done better with the chance from only 8 yards out. Grocott was soon in action at the other end as he cleared off the line Ben Toseland’s in-swinging corner from the right. From the second corner, O’Connor put his shot wide at the far post. Kettering looked in full control now and a shivering Orrin Pendley headed a Hoenes free kick wide. Connor made a good save from Toseland’s searching cross before Kettering scored the 4th goal on 88 minutes. The willing Stevens chased a ball on the left. His first attempt at a cross was blocked but he composed himself for a second cross which gave O’Connor and easy tap in. Kettering’s first points were gained in four recent league games at Stratford to keep up chances of at least a play-off spot. Weather permitting, Kettering now have four successive home games: Royston on Tuesday 20th Frome on Saturday 24th Dorchester on Tuesday 27th and Weymouth on Saturday 31st before another key away game at Kings Lynn on Easter Monday. . Full Time: STRATFORD TOWN 0 - 4 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 248 (Poppies fans estimated at 150) Poppies man of the Match: Special mention to Lindon Meikle but given to Matty Stevens.
