Match Report

IN BRIEF: Below par Kettering were 2-0 down after 65 minutes and had not managed a shot on target with Basingstoke scoring through Sam Smart (29 minutes) and Callum Bunting (65). However, their first two shots on target from Aaron OConnor (82) and Matty Stevens (84) brought the game level and signaled an onslaught on the home goal but with no third goal coming. Basingstoke broke away and scored the winner in the third and final minute of added time when Bunting got his second. THE KETTERING SQUAD: With Gary Mulligan and James Brighton out injured and Michael Richens suspended, Rhys Hoenes got a start. Kyle Barker and Ben Bradshaw came in on the bench. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: Kettering started well. Rhys Hoenes 4th minute shot was just wide of the right post with keeper Colm McAdden beaten. The keeper then took a corner from the right with Ben Milnes just missing a header at the near post. After 10 minutes visiting keeper, Paul White, took a header from Sam Argent at the left upright. Milnes free kick was then deflected away for an unproductive corner. Basingstoke began to get a grip on midfield and the game, and White spilled a free kick on the penalty spot but recovered to hold the ball on the ground. Ben Wrights corner on 16 minutes saw Argent unmarked at the back post, but he headed over the top. Milnes 18th minute attempt was blocked out- but in general the Poppies were second best at this stage. In fact the home side should have taken the lead in the 20th minute. Another free kick saw Argent head in to the penalty spot. Callum Bunting was unmarked, but could only poke his shot well over the bar. Another home free kick saw Dan Bayliss, at the left upright, poke the ball straight at White. Bayliss then got forward again and his left foot shot was well wide. White saved a Wright shot and in a rare Kettering attack Hoenes was thwarted by McAdden coming off his line to clear. Home right back Tim Wohlfiel then almost put through his own goal- but the miscue flew just wide. Basingstoke went ahead on 29 minutes. Sam Smart and Hoenes tussled for the ball on the Kettering right. Hoenes won the ball but fell into Smart. He was harshly yellow carded and from the free kick, Wright drove low into the six yard box for Smart to get the first touch to put past White. The Poppies finally rallied and a sweeping move saw Aaron OConnor cross low past the keeper but there was no Kettering player to finish. Whit was called on a couple of times to race off his line to clear through balls as Kettering continued to struggle getting forward. Half Time BASINGSTOKE TOWN 1 - 0 KETTERING TOWN The first chance of the half was set up by Kettering keeper White. His long clearance almost put Hoenes in on goal and McAdden just gathered. Hoenes then set up Milnes- but his curled right foot shot was just wide of the right post. Howe fired wide after a free kick and then set up Gary Stohrer and his left foot effort drifted wide. At least Kettering were having more of the ball at last. On 64 minutes home midfielder Michael Atkinson, already on a yellow card, was lucky to stay on after a nasty foul on OConnor- which warranted a final warning from the Referee. From the free kick a corner ensued and Tom Marshall headed the cross wide. Disaster then struck for Kettering and Gary Stohrer as he lost possession in midfield. The through ball put Callum Bunting clear to round the helpless White to score. Matthew Stevens replaced Hoenes and his first effort- a header from a Milnes free kick was just wide. Kalern Thomas replaced Stohrer with Liam Bateman moving forward and Bateman lashed a wild shot wide. Thomas first touch saw a mis-kick and almost an own goal as the ball sailed wide of the post. It was now approaching the last 10 minutes with the home side looking comfortable and Milnes 79th minute shot was blocked. Kettering scored in the 82nd minute with their first effort on target. Aaron OConnor scored an individual goal as he dribbled across goal and put a crisp low left foot shot past the advancing McAdden. Remarkably it was 2-2 just a couple of minutes later. Ben Toseland came forward on the left and set Bateman off into the left side of the penalty area. His low left foot cross was bundled in at the far post by Stevens. This set off Kettering to a remarkable spell of pressure, forcing 7 corners and two free kicks with the home defence and particularly keeper, McAdden , forced to make last gasp clearances. Kettering could not force the ball in and another Milnes shot went just over the bar as 11 men defended. Basingstoke delivered a final blow in the third and last minute of added time. They broke out of defence and won a free kick with Tom Marshall receiving a yellow card for a touch on Smart who went to ground far too easily. There was no excuse for poor defending though, as Wrights free kick from the right was headed down and in by the unchallenged Bunting to win the game for Basingstoke. The Poppies now have another long a difficult game at Tiverton on Tuesday night before entertaining Kings Langley at home next Saturday. Full Time: BASINGSTOKE TOWN 3 - 2 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 422 (Poppies fans estimated at 75 ) Poppies man of the Match: Lindon Meikle
