Match Report

IN BRIEF: Clinical finishing put the Poppies 4-0 up after 56 minutes with Merthyr coming back strongly in the final quarter to finish the game with two goals themselves. Kettering’s goals came from Aaron O’Connor (8 minutes),Rene Howe (28),Matthew Stevens (33) and Brett Solkhon (56).The Martyr’s goals came from Kerry Morgan (61) and Ian Traylor (85). THE KETTERING SQUAD: Only three substitutes were named. With Michael Richens suspended, James Brighton injured, Callum Snow getting game time in the under 21’s, Liam Bateman abroad and Gary Stohrer at a wedding, the squad was not helped by Ibby Akanbi and Ben Bradshaw failing to make the coach. In a slightly changed formation, Kalern Thomas started, Brett Solkhon was in midfield and Lindon Meikle reverted to the three man bench. The Poppies set up slightly differently and looked comfortable as they forced an early corner which saw home keeper, Oliver Davies, take Brett Solkhon’s header. Kettering took the lead in simple fashion in the 8th minute. Ben Toseland’s long throw from the left was headed on by Rene Howe for Aaron O’Connor to turn sharply and lash past Davies. A 12th minute free kick from Ben Milnes was won by Tom Marshall and the header was taken by Davies. Then O’Connor’s through ball to Matty Stevens saw Davies quickly off his line to thwart the danger. The Martyr’s were passing well and their first effort on 18 minutes saw Miles John fire just wide. Three minutes on and Kettering advanced again with Milnes’ free kick cleared and his shot from the clearance deflected for a corner – which Howe headed wide. On 27 minutes Howe hit a shot off the top of the crossbar after a fantastic run down the left and low cross from Toseland. Within a minute though the lead was doubled. This time O’Connor did very well on the left and crossed for Howe to head firmly past Davies. Despite being two goals up, Merthyr were having a lot of possession and their best chance to date, on the half hour, saw Adam Davies’ cross headed down and almost past Paul White who made a great reflex save low to his right. Davies then set Ian Traylor off down the right but the striker fired into the side netting. The miss proved to be costly as Kettering scored again a minute later. Howe crossed from the left and Matty Stevens showed good control to turn and blast the ball past Davies at the right post. The Referee deserves credit foul allowing ‘advantage’ as O’Connor was fouled in the lead up to the goal. Harry Franklin’s 36th minute drive was tipped over the bar by White and the keeper was in action again a minute later. Tom Marshall’s back pass was short allowing Traylor to pounce and White made another sharp save. Traylor put a free kick over the bar from a good position and finally in the half, Jaye Bowen fired well over. Half Time MERTHYR TOWN 0 - 3 KETTERING TOWN Home player-manager, Gavin Williams, brought on tall striker, Ryan Prosser at the start of the half, sacrificing Miles John. The game followed the same pattern with Merthyr playing some nice football in midfield and Kettering creating the chances. Ben Toseland’s searching low cross was just too far for O’Connor and Stevens at the far post and soon, at the other end, Ashley Evans’ shot was over the top. On 55 minutes a sweeping Kettering move set Howe off on the right and his cross was almost turned into goal by a defender. The resulting corner on the right saw Toseland’s cross headed goalwards by Brett Solkhon and blocked. The ball rebounded to Solkhon who thumped the ball past keeper and defenders on the line to make it 4-0. Merthyr soon pulled a goal back as Traylor got past Toseland to pull back for Kerry Morgan to fire a crisp right foot drive low past White and in at the left upright. Howe had a good chance on 70 minutes, but his shot was well blocked. Merthyr then used their other two substitutes, including Manager, Gavin Williams and were to ‘have a go’ at Kettering. Kettering broke though on 74 minutes and Stevens ran on to beat keeper, Davies, with a chip – but Matthew Harris got back to clear a certain goal away from the line. Merthyr were certainly now taking the game to Kettering and a short corner saw substitute,Connor Hanford force White into a save low to his left. The Poppies had some nervous moments in defence with the added threat of Prosser a problem but still broke well and substitute Rhys Hoenes’ run and cross saw Milnes shoot over the bar. Traylor put an 83rd minute left foot shot over the bar but scored a minute later. The Referee determined a harsh handball against Gary Mulligan in the home penalty area and with Kettering looking to make two substitutions – Merthyr quickly took a free kick and broke away for Traylor to fire in at the right post. There were a few nervous moments for Kettering in the final minutes and added time as they saw the game out with White saving well from Corey Jenkins to preserve the two goal lead.
