Match Report

IN BRIEF: Farnborough shocked the Poppies to take a 7th minute lead and it wasn’t until the 27th minute that Brett Solkhon equalised from the penalty spot- which was his last action as he injured himself in the process. However the second period saw the home side rattle in five goals, with Matty Stevens scoring a hat-trick and Aaron O’Connor the other two. Farnborough got a second with a Ben Toseland own goal. The other results today mean that the Poppies will visit Slough in the play-off semi final on Wednesday at 7.45pm. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Tom Marshall was injured and not in the squad. Kalern Thomas, Ben Toseland and Aaron O’Connor returned after suspension and injury and Rene Howe was on the bench with Liam Bateman,Gary Stohrer and Wilson Carvalho. The Pitch was good at 11am, only to suffer heavy rain which necessitated more hard work to get the game staged. Farnborough had the benefit of the strong breeze in the first half as both teams acclimatised early on. Kettering were first to show as Rhys Hoenes set up Lindon Meikle and the shot was just over Aaron Bufton’s bar. However the Boro took the lead after 7 minutes. A long throw on the right was headed on and Michael Fernandes found himself completely unmarked a few yards out for an easy tap in. They almost got a second four minutes later as Connor Calcutt collected a clearance from a free kick and his left foot shot was just wide. Kettering could just not get going with passes going astray. They forced a couple of corners and from the second a loose ball found Ben Toseland and the shot was over the bar. Was this going to be one of those days for Kettering? They continued to struggle albeit Lindon Meikle was having another good game. In fact it was Meikle who won a penalty on 27 minutes as, going through, he was felled by Bufton. Brett Solkhon slotted home the penalty but injured himself in the process and he was replaced by Rene Howe. Farnborough had nine or ten players behind the ball, but were quick to break. From one such excursion into the Kettering half, Manny Omrore tried his luck from fully 35 yards and the shot was wild and wide. A second break was a 2 on 1 situation for the visitors and Michael Richens got back in the nick of time to clear from Omrore at the expense of a corner. From the kick, Rob Bartley headed wide. Ben Toseland had another shot, this time with his right foot, and it was marginally over the bar. Just on the break Boro’s Luke King took out Hoenes with a cynical foul and may have been fortunate only be yellow carded. Half Time: Kettering Town 1 - 1 Farnborough What happened in the minutes after the break could not have been predicted at the end of the first half. Within a minute Rene Howe got clear on the right and crossed early to the near post for Aaron O’Connor to do what he does best, as he tapped in to give Kettering the lead. Six minutes later a Kalern Thomas long throw in from the right got a deflection and Matty Stevens hooked the ball in high off the left upright to make it 3-1. Three minutes later it was 4-1. The ball was worked through to O’Connor on the left and the shot went in despite a defender’s efforts to clear. Howe then set up Stevens for a fairly easy chance- but the young striker’s poor shot was easily saved. Kettering scored a 5th goal in the 64th minute. A free kick was headed towards goal by the towering Orrin Pendley and Stevens turned the ball in. Kettering conceded a second goal on 72 minutes as a free kick was not cleared and under pressure from King, Ben Toseland conceded an own goal. Kalern Thomas’ 76th minute shot was deflected wide for a corner as the game settled. Kettering did get a 6th however on 83 minutes. King wrestled Stevens away as he shaped to head in. Stevens tucked away the penalty and King somehow remained on the field. So a fine 6-2 win and great home league record for the season.
