Match Report

IN BRIEF: A 5th game in 10 days at champions Hereford was always going to be a big ask. With players nursing injuries and aching limbs the Poppies were blitzed as the champions scored in the 12th,13th and 15th minutes. The goals came from Dara O’Shea, Rob Purdie and a Lance Smith penalty . To their credit Kettering stuck to it and pulled a goal back on 49 minutes through Matthew Stevens before Smith scored his second on 68 minutes. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Rotation again saw Gary Mulligan, Lindon Meikle and Rhys Hoenes drop to the bench with Tom Marshall,Ben Milnes and Rene Howe starting. THE GAME: An early cross from the home skipper,Jimmy Oates from the right saw Jennison Myrie-Williams head over the bar. Kettering thought they’d scored in the 5th minute as Rene Howe headed in Ben Milnes free kick. The Referee however awarded a free kick for something not clearly evident. Keyon Reffell then crossed from the right and Myrie-Williams this time headed wide. Kettering keeper, Paul White was then nearly caught out by Rob Purdie’s deep free kick, with the keeper just able to palm the ball away for a corner. Hereford scored on 12 minutes. Liam Bateman somehow blocked a shot on the goal line. The ball was cleared out of the penalty area, collected by Dara O’Shea and his crisp low left foot shot beat White at his right post. Worse came for Kettering a minute later. A precision cross found Rob Purdie completely unmarked and he looped his header over White and in. It was 3-0 just three minutes later as Michael Richens tripped Mike McGrath. Lance Smith converted the penalty with White going the wrong way. At this stage there was still 74 minutes to go and an avalanche appeared possible. But Kettering began to compete and Rene Howe worked well to set up Brett Solkhon – now moved into midfield out of defence. Solkhon received the ball 18 yards out and with a free shot just cleared the bar. Liam Bateman won a corner on Kettering’s right and Ben Milnes’ cross was headed wide by Howe. Brett Solkhon’s shot on the turn was then held by home keeper,Will Puddy. White confidently collected a Hereford corner as Kettering continued to get in the game and for a 10 minute spell looked more like a top five team. Puddy also confidently took a couple of high balls and Kettering were getting stuck in with both Howe and Richens receiving yellow cards, but the visitors could not get near the home goal. Just on the break McGrath’s low shot was simple for White. Half Time: HEREFORD 3 - 0 KETTERING TOWN The temperature was rising in the stadium- not a help for weary players as the half started. Both sides made two substitutions- and in Kettering’s case the two players cautioned were withdrawn with an eye on participation in future games….. White was soon out of his penalty area to head clear from home substitute Mike Symons. The Poppies pulled a goal back in the 49th minute. Wilson Carvalho, on for Howe crossed low from the right. Aaron O’Connor’s flick came off the post and Matty Stevens drove home the loose ball. White took a header on his own goal line and the clearance saw Rhys Hoenes win a corner on the left. The restart saw Puddy spill the ball but the defence cleared. The keeper then collected a Milnes’ free kick. Hereford sealed the result in the 68th minute as an unmarked Smith back heeled a cross from the left into a seemingly unguarded net. Kettering came back and Solkhon badly miscued a shot wide. Kettering won a couple of corners without threatening the goal. For Hereford, Eliot Richards fired a shot out of the ground. Kettering then had another chance as Hoenes streaked into the penalty area and saw his shot come off Puddy’s legs. Carvalho blasted the rebound well wide. Hereford had a final chance as White could only palm a cross into the path of Smith and with a great chance for a hat-trick he scooped the ball over the bar. With today’s results the opportunity knocks for Kettering to finish runners up with a superior goal difference if they can gain two wins at home to Tiverton Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm) and Farnborough on Saturday next (3pm). Get along to Latimer Park to cheer on the team and be the twelfth man. Full Time: HEREFORD 4 - 1 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 4556 (Poppies fans 179) Poppies man of the Match: Matthew Stevens
