Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: A tough Emirates F A Cup tie ended all square and goes to Latimer Park next Tuesday at 7.45pm. The two teams, from a similar level in the Pyramid, cancelled each other out with Kettering taking the lead just before half time through Michael Richens- only for a strong response from the hosts who equalised through Sean Cooke’s free kick in the 75th minute. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Jordan Wright kept his place, with Ben Milnes and Gary Mulligan returning in place of Marshall Willock (not eligible) and Gary Stohrer – who was one of the seven substitutes. The Teams lined up: NANTWICH TOWN: 1 Will Jaaskalainen 2 Troy Bourne 3 Courtney Wildin 4 Joel Stair 5 Toby Mullarkey 6 Sam Hall (Captain) 7 Casper Hughes (18 Nathan Cotterell,46) 8 Matt Bell 9 Harry Clayton (17 Steve Jones,72) 10 Sean Cooke 11 David Forbes (14 Clayton Macdonald,72) Unused Substitutes: 12 Jamie Morgan 13 Reece Quinn (G/K) 15 Jordan Davies 16 Ryan Brooke Yellow Cards: Hall,25; Forbes,68. KETTERING TOWN: 1 Jordan Wright 2 Durrell Berry 3 Ben Toseland 4 Brett Solkhon (Captain) 5 Gary Mulligan 6 Michael Richens 7 Rhys Hoenes 8 Aaron O’Connor (18 Gary Stohrer,81) 9 Matthew Stevens (9 Rene Howe,58) 10 Ben Milnes 11 Lindon Meikle (14 James Brighton,78) Unused Substitutes: 12 Ben Baker 15 Paul White (G/K) 16 Samson Maagbe 19 Munashe Sundire Yellow Card: Richens,68. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: For some reason the grass pitch was heavily watered before the start as Kettering started with the benefit of a strong breeze. The Poppies began with intent, taking the game to the Dabbers. Brett Solkhon sent Lindon Meikle away down the right to force an early corner, which was well defended. Kettering forced another two corners, delivered by Ben Toseland, and the second saw Gary Mulligan head wide at the far post. Yet another Kettering corner saw Matthew Stevens win the ball but he was penalised for a foul. Within a minute Durrel Berry sent a low ball through for Aaron O’Connor, who missed his kick for a shot from about 10 yards. Ben Toseland’s 10th minute free kick went for another corner and Toseland’s delivery this time was too deep for Mulligan. The Dabbers first effort on goal almost produced a goal. A free kick was not cleared and Jordan Wright did very well to parry a 10 yard shot. Nantwich were accumulating free kicks with Sean Cooke being the main recipient. He got up from one free kick to fire his shot against the defensive wall. Kettering’s O’Connor saw a left foot drive come off a defender and then Meikle broke on the right but the cross went to on-loan keeper, Will Jaaskalainen. Soon the keeper was in action again as he saved from Meikle after a set piece had only been partially cleared. Three more Kettering corners followed with Jaaskalainen dealing well with one under his cross bar and then making a clean take from the third cross. On 31 minutes Ben Milnes diagonal pass sent O’Connor down the left- but the shot went behind. Nantwich’s only attacking threat came from numerous free kicks as their players seemed to go down easily and a couple of set pieces saw the first beat everyone in the air, and the second headed away by Michael Richens. The home team’s best chance to date came on 38 minutes as Cooke did very well on the left and his cross saw Matt Bell head over from a good position. Rhys Hoenes won a corner on 43 minutes. Milnes’ cross from the left to the far post was headed back in and Richens was the first to react to lash the ball in for the opening goal. Half Time NANTWICH TOWN 0 - 1 KETTERING TOWN Now having the wind behind them, Nantwich came out with determination and Harry Clayton’s early shot was held by Wright. Kettering responded straight away and only a great tackle by Joel Stair prevented O’Connor going in on goal. Nantwich began to take some control of the game, winning the midfield battle and the free kick count in their favour was mounting up- giving plenty of attacking threat. On the hour, the Dabbers created a great chance as Cooke’s low cross from the left found David Forbes- but he turned and fired wide of the right post. Kettering came back with a good attack, only for Hoenes’ to send his cross straight at the keeper. Rene Howe was on for Stevens and he nearly scored in the 65th minute. Toseland intercepted a pass, ran on 40 yards, and his low cross saw Howe hit the post- only to be pulled back for offside. The equaliser came on 75 minutes. Cooke and Richens came together, challenging for the same ball and Cooke went over. No point in debating if it was a foul, as Cooke stroked his 20 yard free kick over the wall and in at the left upright, for a classy finish. The goal seemed to revive the Poppies as James Brighton entered the fray in place of Meikle. Hoenes broke away on the right, but the cross was poor. Then Toseland delivered a great cross to Howe at the far post only to see the striker head over from a great position. The Poppies then had a penalty appeal turned down as Hoenes went past his man only to be brought down. The Referee awarded a corner which was cleared away. The final exchanges saw home substitute, Steve Jones, cross for Bell and, unmarked, he headed over. Richens shot was wide for Kettering, who then had a corner cleared before Cooke fired out of the ground from 25 yards for the final goal attempt. So back to Kettering on Tuesday, with both clubs rightly in the First round draw on Monday evening, and then a vital home league game against Slough on Saturday. Full Time: NANTWICH TOWN 1 - 1 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 760 (Poppies fans estimated at 350) Poppies Man of the Match: Ben Toseland
