Match Report

Tonight’s game at Hayden Road in the BigFreeBet.com League challenge cup ended up with the home team progressing courtesy of a 3-2 win. A depleted Kettering squad took the lead in just the second minute through Rhys Hoenes, only to be pegged back by half time with goals from Ben Diamond and Joel Gyasi. Gyasi added a second early in the second half and Matthew Stevens pulled a goal back – but Kettering just could not find an equaliser. Team line-ups: AFC Rushden and Diamonds: 1 Ben Heath 2 Cameron Gilchrist 3 Ben Ford (12 Callum Westwood,66) 4 Sam Brown 5 Blaize Punter 6 Ben Farrell 7 Joel Gyasi 8 Joe Curtis 9 Ben Diamond 10 Ryan Robbins (14 Tom Lorraine,73) 11 Luke Fairlamb Unused Subs: 13 Kyle Swailes 15 Jack Ashton 19 Chief Boateng Yellow Cards: None Kettering Town: 1 Justin Greatorex 2 Munashe Sundire 3 Ben Toseland 4 Brett Solkhon (Captain) 5 Liam Bateman 6 Gary Stohrer 7 Lindon Meikle 8 James Brighton (15 Michael Morrow,46) 9 Matthew Stevens 10 Ben Milnes 11 Rhys Hoenes Unused Subs: 12 Gary Mulligan 16 Daniel Camacho 17 Paul White Yellow Cards:None Kettering were without Durrell Berry,Gary Mulligan,Michael Richens,Aaron O’Connor,Rene Howe,Marshall Willock and lost Paul White in the warm up with a back problem. There were only two fit players on the bench in youngsters Michael Morrow and Daniel Camacho- neither of whom have a full first team game to their name. Morrow replaced the injured Brighton on 46 minutes. Despite this the Poppies took a shock lead in only the second minute as Rhys Hoenes latched onto Ben Milnes through ball and fired low past Ben Heath. Brett Solkhon headed over from a corner and Matty Stevns stooped to head a James Brighton cross – but steered the effort wide. The Diamonds equalised in the 20th minute. Justin Greatorex made a good save at full stretch, but lost control of the ball as he hit the ground, gifting a goal for Ben Diamond. The Poppies responded with Hoenes seeing a shot saved and the rebound he fired against the crossbar. Joel Gyasi then put the Diamonds in front on 25 minutes, with a well taken right foot strike after the Kettering defence failed to clear. The Poppies saw three more efforts go wide before the break with Gary Stohrer,Ben Toseland and Milnes all missing the target. Half Time: AFC Rushden and Diamonds 2 - 1 Kettering Town Solkhon’s set piece header fell easily for Heath before Gyasi struck again in the 49th minute. He turned well to drive a low left foot shot past Greatorex. Kettering responded as Milnes free kick hit the crossbar and, following in, Lindon Meikle amazingly put the ball over the bar from a few yards out. The Diamonds looked comfortable albeit that Heath had to save from Stevens and their only threat was to see Ryan Robbins fire over the bar after a good turn. Kettering pulled a goal back on 78 minutes as Meikle’s low cross was swept in by Stevens. Diamonds saw the game home safely as only a Ben Toseland effort threatened and Heath saved. The Poppies now go to Dorchester on Saturday in the league, then Daventry in the Hillier Cup before (finally) a home game against Gosport Borough on 25th. Full Time: AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3 - 2 Kettering Town Attendance: 615 (Awaiting confirmation on the number of Kettering fans)
