Match Report

IN A NUTSHELL: Kettering were eliminated from this season’s F A Trophy at the first attempt by Leek Town, who gained some revenge for last season’s F A Cup defeat on the same ground. Leek were 2-0 up after 54 minutes, with goals from Dan Trickett-Smith (28 minutes) and Niall Maguire (54) only for Kettering to draw level just 14 minutes later through Ben Toseland (57) and Aaron O’Connor (68). The winner came in the 86th minute from Tim Grice. THE KETTERING SQUAD: Both Jordan Wright and Ben Stevens were ineligible and Gary Mulligan was out injured. Durrell Berry was on the bench with Munashe Sundire starting at right back. Lindon Meikle started as did Marshall Willock and Aaron O’Connor was amongst the substitutes. HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED: A grey day met the teams and the pitch was slippery as discovered by several players in the first 10 minutes as they slipped over. Kettering’s again changed squad lined up in the usual formation with James Brighton on the left side and Rhys Hoenes pushed up top. Leek forced the first corner- cleared by Michael Richens and Kettering had the first chance when home keeper Ben Chapman was out to hook the ball away as Hoenes ran on towards a Rene Howe through ball. Leek forced another unproductive corner and Kettering threatened again on 7 minutes as Niall Green was cautioned for taking out Hoenes as he went past him on the left. Ben Milnes’ free kick was punched away by Chapman. On 12 minutes a mistake by Brett Solkhon allowed a chance for Leek but an overhit pass was collected by a grateful Paul White in the Kettering goal. A Kettering corner was wasted with the delivery too deep and at the other end Paul White was almost caught out as Tim Grice’s header caused problems with White slipping on the turf- but he recovered just in time to collect the ball. Solkhon got a decisive block on a Marc Grocott shot and as the game still swayed backwards and forwards.Milnes blasted over a shot from a Hoenes lay back from the right. Within a minute, Lindon Meikle fired over from a good position. On 25 minutes a Ben Toseland run and cross saw Howe turn and shoot but a defender got in an excellent block. Leek took the lead on 28 minutes. Young Marshall Willock was having a testing time in the air and could not clear the ball, and Dan Trickett-Smith tucked a neat right foot drive past White and in off the left upright from 20 yards. Four minutes later, Leek had created another chance as Robert Stevenson got clear on the right but his shot went across goal and out. Stevenson’s next effort was closer – but just wide of the left post. Hoenes got in a decent left foot shot from Toseland’s pass but it was just over the target. On 35 minutes, White took a shot from Grice and at this stage Leek were looking good for their lead. Kettering came back a little just before the break as Chapman could only flap at a Meikle cross and fortunately a defender was there to clear. Kettering’s best chance of the half followed, but James Brighton could only shoot wide on the volley, as Hoenes headed on a Meikle cross. The final action saw Howe sweep another Meikle cross wide – albeit the Assistant’s flag was raised. Half Time LEEK TOWN 1 - 0 KETTERING TOWN Ben Toseland and James Brighton swapped positions on the left at the start of the half. Brighton soon stabbed a left foot shot wide and Richens’ saw two low crosses from the right both blocked with the second flying over the bar for a corner. The Poppies were caught cold on 54 minutes as home man of the match, Trickett-Smith delivered a free kick into the box which was headed down and in at the near post by the unmarked Niall Maguire. The Poppies tried to respond quickly and an incisive run by Milnes won a corner on the left which was cleared. However Kettering did reply- just three minutes after the second goal. They caused havoc on the right with both Hoenes and Meikle seeing shots desperately blocked out. From the loose ball Toseland’s shot hit the post and appeared to run along the goal-line-but the Assistant signalled a goal. There was still to be plenty of football in this game. White took a Stevenson cross and his opposite number, Chapman just got to a low Hoenes shot down to his right. White then took a Trickett-Smith shot. Trickett-Smith then benefited from a flowing home move- but put his cross too wide. Kettering then equalised on 68 minutes. Good work by Howe saw a great ball through to O’Connor on the left and his shot across Chapman went in at the far post. A minute later, Howe worked a way in from the right and his left foot shot was just over the bar. Leek got forward again forcing two fruitless corners. There was a controversial incident on 74 minutes – and something of a turning point in the game. As O’Connor, with his back to goal, took a ball on his chest 12 yards out he was blatantly shoved over. What would have been a clear foul anywhere on the pitch was not adjudged as a foul in the penalty area though. Solkhon then had to be alert to deflect a Trickett-Smith shot away for a corner and on 84 minutes Leek had a great chance to score. Willock was outdone by Grice, who rounded White- but Willock got back to make a great sliding stop from Grice’s shot towards the open goal. Not to be outdone though, Grice scored what was to be the winner on 86 minutes. Kettering failed to clear their lines and Grice, receiving the ball, unmarked, 15 yards out, swept a left foot shot past White. Kettering threw men forward and Leek dropped men back as the visitors searched for another equaliser. Chadwick was fortunate to see his deflection just clear the bar and Chapman was tall enough to just palm over Meikle’s last gasp effort. Kettering now have two league away games at Bishop’s Stortford on Tuesday and Farnborough on Saturday, and need to look for important league wins to keep up with the leaders. Full Time: LEEK TOWN 3 - 2 KETTERING TOWN Attendance: 390 (Poppies fans estimated at 100 ) Poppies Man of the Match: Lindon Meikle
