Match Report

IN BRIEF: Another great game for the neutral, with the Poppies losing out to a cruel winner in the 86th minute. The end to end game had goals, penalties and incidents. Kettering scored after just three minutes through Lindon Meikle with Royston scoring twice in five minutes through Adam Marriott’s penalty and Scott Bridges to take the lead. Kettering then equalised before the break through Matty Stevens. The second period saw Josh Castiglione put the hosts in front and then Brett Solkhon equalise from the penalty spot before the 86th minute winner from a defender deflection on Rohdell Gordon’s shot. THE KETTERING SQUAD: The eleven who finished the game last Saturday started and Tom Marshall was back on the bench after illness. The Poppies are of course without the injured Durrell Berry,James Brighton,Ben Milnes and the suspended and then unavailable Michael Richens. Home keeper Josh Tibbets was soon off his line to get to a through ball before Kettering’s Rhys Hoenes but he was beaten in Kettering’s next attack. Ben Toseland’s cross was controlled by Rene Howe who set up Lindon Meikle for a shot which was well placed over Tibbets and under the bar. Kettering keeper, Paul White, gathered Adam Marriott’s cross, and he was soon out to punch away from a free kick and then took another cross. The lively Josh Castiglione on the right was causing problems for Toseland and the young full back did well to get a block on Castiglione’s low drive in the 18th minute. Dan Brathwaite cleared away under pressure from Kettering’s leading score Aaron O’Connor and then O’Connor won a corner and his header from Toseland’s corner was wide. It was a good game and Sam Corcoran saw his free kick cleared by Howe to Scott Bridges and his shot was blocked out. At the other end Howe set up O’Connor and Sam Gaughran hurredly cleared. The Crows equalised on 31 minutes. Bridges shot was deflected for a corner. From the kick, Gary Mulligan, under no real pressure seemed to loose his bearings and handled the ball over his head. It was a strange one and difficult to explain- but Adam Marriott tucked away the penalty. Marriott soon set up Bridges and White made a good save from the shot. Not to be outdone though, Bridges scored with a deflected sot on 35 minutes – with Marriott again the provider. Kettering powered back and on 38 minutes O’Connor put in Howe on the right of the area and Tibbets made a great save. The equaliser on 42 minutes saw a corner on the left partially cleared to O’Connor and his shot was deflected in by Matty Stevens. Kettering had another good chance before the break as O’Connor fired at goal only for Howe to get in the way of the shot as he was ruled offside. Half Time ROYSTON TOWN 2 - 2 KETTERING TOWN The game continued its end to end format in the early stages of the half. O’Connor quickly won a corner which was a poor delivery – and cleared. John Frendo’s shot was easy for White at the other end and a Kalern Thomas cross on 55 minutes was just over the bar. Frendo then set up Castiglione and White saved well. For Kettering, O’Connor had the ball in the net but was clearly offside. Royston forced a couple of corners and Orrin Pendley’s long clearance had to be watched by Tibbets as the ball landed on top of the net. Royston took the lead again in the 63rd minute. Bridges and Marriott combined and a fortunate deflection off a Kettering player and back onto Bridges saw the ball fall nicely for Castiglione to finish inside the right post. It was not long before Kettering equalised. Hoenes was sent scampering through and past Tibbets- only to be brought down by the keeper- who was yellow carded only under current laws. Brett Solkhon, called into action, in view of the poor penalty scoring record, duly put the penalty away. The Poppies then had a glorious chance to go ahead in the 70th minute. A good break saw Hoenes with an initial chance to shoot, but passing to Stevens, he could not get a shot in either as Tibbets struggled to get in position. Finally O’Connor looked certain to shoot in- but a defender’s boot got the slightest of touches to save the day. Matty Stevens headed a cross just wide as did O’Connor and Howe had a decent chance but Tibbets saved well. Rohdell Gordon replaced Marriott and his first touches saw him blast a shot well over the bar- and on 76 minutes he forced White to save another shot. Now into the final 10 minutes, both teams were looking positive for a winner and Solkhon’s 84th minute shot was saved by Tibbets. Sam Corcoran fired across goal from the right for Royston, who then scored what was to be the winner on 86 minutes. White seemed to have Gordon’s shot covered- but the ball deflected off substitute Tom Marshall- wrong-footing White as the ball rolled in. Kettering had to come forward with Mulligan, only just pushed into midfield, now pushed up front. Howe had a decent chance with a header but Tibbets was able to collect and Castiglione,on the break, poked the ball wide. Kettering are in home league action next Saturday when Tiverton are the visitors (3pm) and again on the 13th when Royston visit in the rematch (7.45pm). On Tuesday there is a home game in the NFA Hillier Senior Cup semi final when AFC Rushden and Diamonds visit (7.45pm).
