Match Report

Tonight’s Northants Hillier Cup semi-final was won by Kettering Town who progress to the final against Brackley Town in April. The match ended all square in a pulsating 3-3 draw with the Poppies winning out 5-4 in the penalty shoot out. Despite the teams having aspirations in their league campaigns, both Managers chose to field strong squads, with Kettering including four players who had played for the now extinct Rushden and Diamonds, and AFC including seven players who had worn the Poppies shirt. The teams were: Kettering Town: 1 Paul White 2 Kalern Thomas 12 Liam Bateman 4 Brett Solkhon (Captain) 5 Gary Mulligan 6 Orrin Pendley 14 Gary Stohrer (7 Lindon Meikle,46) 8 Aaron O’Connor 9 Rene Howe 10 Kyle Barker (3 Ben Toseland,46) 15 Matthew Stevens (11 Rhys Hoenes,74) Unused substitutes: 17 Callum Snow 18 Ben Bradshaw AFC Rushden and Diamonds: 13 Ben Heath 2 Callum Westwood 3 Sam Brown 4 Jack Westbrook 5 Liam Dolman 6 Jack Ashton 7 Joel Gyasi 8 Ben Farrell (12 Ross Oulton,74) 9 Tom Lorraine 10 Ryan Robbins (14 Chief Boeteng,78) 11 Joe Curtis Unused substitutes: 15 Blaize Punter 16 Cameron Gilchrist 18 Ben Ford MATCH REPORT: It was snowing and that was to continue all game and the pitch became very wet. The visitors started well and and the confidence of a table topping side, taking the game to their hosts to great effect. In fact they score after just 8 minutes when Ryan Robbins stooped to direct a header from a free kick down and past Paul White from 10 yards. Kettering saw Rene Howe’s header go wide and Liam Dolman blocked a Matty Stevens shot. Diamonds were breaking well from defensive situations and scored again in the 22nd minute. Kettering’s corner was cleared and Callum Westwood and Joel Gyasi broke at speed. The ball was worked to Robbins on the right. His first effort was blocked but he netted the rebound with a neat left foot finish. For a while the visitors dominated both the play and the possession- but without creating further chances. In fact Kettering had the better chances, with Ben Heath smothering from Aaron O’Connor and Howe placing a shot over the bar after he had robbed Liam Dolman. The Poppies had grown in confidence later in the half and scored in added time. Kalern Thomas was brought down in the penalty area and Brett Solkhon tucked away the resulting penalty. Half Time: Kettering Town 1 - 2 AFC Rushden and Diamonds The second half was considerably delayed on Police orders following an incident in the tunnel area as the players and officials entered the changing room area. Lindon Meikle and Ben Toseland replaced Kyle Barker and Gary Stohrer. When the half started the Poppies certainly had got the bit between their teeth and came out in determined fashion. Rene Howe was featuring and put a 46th minute left foot shot wide from a good position. His header from Ben Toseland’s corner was saved. And his 54th minute header from a long throw was pushed onto the bar by Ben Heath. Kalern Thomas was rampaging down the right and his 57th minute cross slipped just behind the goal. Ben Toseland’s 60th minute free kick was held by Heath and Kettering equalised 2 minutes later. Toseland’s corner from the left was met by Howe’s low header and the ball dribbled past a number of players and went in at the unguarded right post. It was an exciting game and White came and smothered from Robbins. Both teams were going for it as Rhys Hoenes replaced Matty Stevens and Ross Oulton replaced Ben Farrell. Farrell had been la little fortunate to stay on after two deliberate foul play incidents- receiving a caution for the first one only. For Kettering, O’Connor turned and fired wide and Solkhon had a great chance with a header but it looped over the bar. Kettering went ahead in the 86th minute as O’Connor set Rhys Hoenes clear and he finished well low to Heath’s right. There was still further drama though as Kettering failed to clear a free kick and Liam Dolman’s low left foot shot through a mass of players crept in at the left upright. And so it was to penalties… Full Time: Kettering Town 3 - 3 AFC Rushden and Diamonds Penalties: Kettering AFC Rushden and Diamonds Solkhon - scored Dolman- scored Hoenes- scored Curtis- scored O’Connor- scored Oulton- saved Howe- scored Lorraine- scored Thomas- missed Westwood- scored Toseland- scored Gyasi - missed Attendance: 309 KTFC Elgoods Brewery Man of the Match selected by Sponsors BG BET:Kalern Thomas Klondike winner: Jane Goodyear wins £75 on ticket number: 23229 The Poppies now have three home league games: Saturday 10th- Tiverton Town at 3pm Tuesday 13th – Royston Town at 7.45pm Saturday 17th- Bishops Stortford at 3pm
