THE KETTERING SQUAD: Brett Solkhon returned in place of the unavailable Tom Marshall. Ben Milnes returned to the starting line up with Rhys Hoenes dropping to the bench. Kettering were first to show as Ben Milnes burst down the middle into the penalty area, but was crowded out by the St Ives defence. Then Gary Stohrer was set up in front of goal- but the ball had gone into touch before the cross. Phil Draycott got clear on the left for the Ives, and his left foot drive was saved by Paul White. Kettering soon replied and Milnes crossed for Lindon Meikle and hesitation allowed a defender to clear. The Poppies went ahead in the 17th minute. Good work by Ben Toseland allowed Brett Solkhon to feed Aaron O’Connor and his firm right foot drive gave Tim Trebes, in the visitors’ goal, no chance. The visitors forced two corners which both gave White a problem as he failed to gather and having dropped one cross he was grateful to his defenders to clear the ball away from the line. On the half hour, Milnes fired marginally wide after good work by Stohrer and O’Connor. Then O’Connor’s cross from the left saw Trebes flapping and Rene Howe could not force the loose ball into the net. Kettering keeper,White, then had another panic as he failed to deal with a Ben Seymour-Shove free kick and again the defence cleared the loose ball. For Kettering Gary Mulligan headed wide from a free kick and then Howe set up Meikle, but the shot was poor. As the interval loomed, O’Connor’s snapshot was wide and Stohrer miscued well wide- but Kettering had had the better of e relatively quiet half. Half Time: Kettering Town 1 - 0 St Ives Town The Poppies came out with all guns blazing. Howe put Stohrer away and as his shot was blocked, O’Connor hit the rebound onto the top of the net. St Ives then created space on the left and Seymour-Shove had a reasonable shooting chance put the chance high and wide. A flowing 52nd minute Kettering move saw Howe and O’Connor set up Toseland for a shot which Trebes did well to palm over the bar. Stohrer then hit a left foot shot well wide before Kettering went two up in the 54th minute. Stohrer and O’Connor combined well with the cross coming off a defender for Howe to sweep in. Seymour-Shove then got away down the left and his shot beat White only to come off the outside of the left upright. Matty Stevens came on to give Aaron O’Connor a deserved rest and within a couple of minutes found himself with an open goal to aim at and his shot came off the post. Ben Milnes’ free kick was saved by Trebes as Kettering piled on the pressure. On 65 minutes the overworked Ives defence got in two great blocks to foil goal-bound shots from Milnes and Stevens and the rebound found Liam Bateman who blasted high over the bar from a great position. Kettering made the game totally safe on 73 minutes. Toseland got the ball through to Howe in the penalty area and finally Milnes turned and fired in off the right post. Howe saw another shot blocked and Bateman went over in the penalty area with the Referee not interested in a penalty. It was 4-0 on 82 minutes. Stevens had another chance which was saved and substitute,Rhys Hoenes, swept the loose ball into the net. Ben Baker made a welcome return to first team action and crossed for Stevens to fire wide and then had a shot himself which was blocked. St Ives pulled a goal back in bizarre fashion as Draycott’s high left foot free kick from the right seemed to deceive White at his right post and he allowed the ball to drop over him and into the net off the post. There was just time for Howe to head a Milnes free kick and Trebes saved and finally White had to palm over a Ryan McGeorge shot. The Poppies now have two more home games on Saturday against Stratford (3pm) and next Tuesday against Royston (7.45pm).
