On a dry but cold afternoon Royston in white shirts and black shorts kicked off defending the BM Pallets en with the host in red and black. Sam Corcoran started as he intended to continue and as early as the third minute the referee was giving him a talking to for a foul on Michael Richens. Kettering were pressing from the start and won their first corner after four minutes but it came to nothing.

On twelve minutes Ben Milnes was making a positive run through the centre of Royston's defence until his forward progress was halted by being cut down by Mentis a few yards outside of the penalty area. With the wall a lot less than ten yards from the ball Marcus Kelly took it short to Lindon Meikle who unleashed a powerful shot towards goal. It was too hot for Joe Welch to handle and he could merely parry it out to Aaron O'Connor unmarked six yards out. Aaron could not take advantage of the opportunity and put the chance over the bar.

It was all Kettering at this stage on nineteen minutes Meikle played a ball inside to Milnes whose shot a goal could only be parried behind by Welch. Before the corner could be taken attention was drawn back to the half-way line where Declan Towers was sitting forlornly on the ground, he limped off to be replaced by Gary Stohrer which required a re-jigging of the back for with Lathaniel Rowe-Turner moving into the centre to accommodate Gary at left-back. Kelly delivered the corner into the vicinity of the penalty spot were Richens met it with a glancing header which flew just wide of the post. Three minutes later Kettering won another corner when AO'C chased a seemingly lost cause and pressurised the defender into conceding a corner. The corner was partially cleared but only to Richens whose shot was blocked on the line by Harry Joseph. Four minutes later another corner led to a defender throwing himself in front of a Meikle goal-bound shot. The ball ballooned up and over the bar but it could have gone anywhere.

On the half hour Royston managed to get into Kettering's penalty area when they won their first corner. Two minutes later Corcoran finally received a yellow card for a bad foul on Milnes one of a succession of poorly timed tackles. The dust had barely settled when he hit Richens with another poorly timed challenge worthy in itself of a caution if not red. The referee showed leniency deciding upon a lengthy lecture. With respect to Kettering's recent performance against ten men perhaps him staying on the pitch was for the better. Joe Neal then had Royston's best chance of the game but he could only direct his shot into the side netting with Paul White closely guarding his near post.

Kettering had the last meaningful action of the half when a corner from the left when headed clear but was collected by Craig Stanley who fed the ball back into the middle where a Richens header brought another good save from Welch. There was enough time left for Meikle to pick up a caution for his first foul of the game which seemed slightly harsh given the amount of fouls committed by the visitors. Adam Murray was issued a balancing caution before the break.

Half Time: Kettering Town 0  Royston Town 0

Royston replaced Danny Green with Rohdell Gordon at half-time but it did nothing to alter the flow of the game. After two minutes good work between Dan Holman and Dion Kelly-Evans led to the defender delivering a good ball across the penalty area it eventually ended up with Richens whose shot was deflected behind with the keeper beaten.

Kettering made their second change on 57 minutes with DKE being sacrificed for Rhys Hoenes. Kettering were still creating chances but not taking them to break the deadlock. Holman was guilty of putting over when well placed seven yards out and AO'C made a break with two defenders in close pursuit. He won the race to the ball but put his shot straight at the keeper.

The crucial goal came after 69 minutes. Meikle threaded a beautiful ball through for AO'C to run onto. Daniel Braithwaite made his first mistake of the game when his sliding attempt failed to cut the ball out. Aaron showed excellent poise and his first touch pushed the ball across the face of goal and in at the far post beating the keeper who was torn between choosing which post to cover. 1-0 Kettering 69 mins.

Kettering's job should have been made easier two minutes later when Corcoran got a fully deserved second caution for another bad challenge on Michael Richens. Royston started to push forward with nothing to loose with substitute Rohdell Gordon being their most effective forward. Kettering were making their supporters sweat as they were defending deeper and deeper. This was reinforced by replacing the effective Ben Milnes for Brett Solkhon. For the second time in a week it was difficult to tell which team had been reduced to ten men. With five minutes to go Hoenes picked up a yellow card for a harmless looking push for which the awarding of a free-kick seemed punishment enough considering some fouls earlier in the match. In the five additional minutes the referee appeared to be losing his grip on the game. Rhys Hoenes made a break down the right wing making towards the box. He was going past Joe Newton who tried to tackle him and was joined by the Crow's captain Braithwaite sliding in. Rhys went down under the challenge and a free kick was awarded with the referee determined to book an offender. He talked to the youngster Newton but Braithwaite admitted to being the offender but was ignored and Newton received a caution. Kettering looked to retain possession down by the corner flag but with the defensive wall less than five yards from the ball the referee insisted that the kick was taken. With the game in danger of descending into farce Mr Genders quickly brought the game to a conclusion by blowing the final whistle.
