With Declan Towers still feeling the effects of the knock he received at Stratford necessitating his half time replacement, Dion Kelly-Evans and Lindon Miekle serving the first and second game respectively of their suspensions KTFC's small squad was fully extended, to such an extent that none of the 5 named substitues have started a first class game for the Poppies.  Ben Toesland came in at left back with Gary Stohrer swapping to right back.  Durrell Berry dropped back into a flat back four with Brett Solkhon starting in a forward midfield position. Rhys Hoenes and Andrea Borg continued working in tandem as the furthest forward.   The pitch looked green and flat as you would expect from a National league south ground.  Romford in all blue with a gold band across the chest kicked off after the teams had changed ends into a stiffish breeze with Kettering in white shirts and red shorts. The earlier dark clouds had cleared away and the sun was giving cause for Romford's keeper Hughes to wear a cap.  The game had barely started when the referee was called into action,   Solkhon rose to head the ball in the middle of the field but it was contested by Taylor backing into him which resulted in both players in a heap on the floor with Solkhon on top.  Brett tried to stand up but Taylor tried to make more of it by preventing that by grabbing hold of Solkhon.  Cue much whistling from the ref and a general melee of finger pointing, thought's of Miekle's early departure at Barwell sprung to mind but to the relief of the Poppies fans the resulting action was a caution for both players and a drop ball. The referee had another decision to make 4 minutes later when  Hoenes chased a ball into the area with a defender who managed to deal with it safely but in the opinion of the Kettering player and the supporters behind the goal with the aid of his arm.  The referee was not swayed by the appeals.  On 7 minutes Ben Miles received the ball about 30 yards out but his shot flew past the wrong side of the post. A minute later Romford had their first attack.  Michael Richens played a poorly directed pass in midfield which was retrieved by a Romford player who played it forward into the box but Toseland was alert to the danger and cleared the ball at the expense of a throw in.  Kettering's next attempt came from Marcus Kelly who received the ball on the half way line and made a direct bee line for the Romford goal. After advancing about 20 yards with the ball he let fly with a shot but it cleared the bar.  Kettering were having the best of the game with a Gary Stohrer cross evaing the defenders, but also Solkhon, to roll harmlessly out for a goalkick.  Romford were resorting to unfair means to try and knock Kettering out of stride. A free kick from Milnes into the box was cleared to the lurking Hoenes but the ball spun off his boot towards Solkhon but over his head.  The wind appeared to be hindering Kettering rather than helping as evidenced by an overhit Toseland cross and a good effort from Hoenes, released by Stohrer, also going over the bar.  On 28 minutes Kettering had their best chance when Hoenes sprung the offside trap and bore down on the Romford shot but his shot was well saved by the keeper.  Josh Smith the linesman was having a good game with no debatable decisions. On the half hour a second Kettring player was cautioned.  This time it was Borg with a mis-timed forwards tackle leaving the home fans wanting a more severe punishment.  A couple of minutes later some rough justice was dealt to Borg who had just pushed the ball past the defender and about to apply the after-burners  when he was cynically dispatched to the floor with a clumsy block.  The free kick was awarded but shortly afterwards Borg limped off the pitch with a knee injury to be replaced by Jahvan Davidson-Miller.  On 41 minutes Nathan Okoye name was entered into the referees notebook this time for persistent fouling. Kelly's attempt from the free kick had Hughes scrambling to cover but the shot was marginally wide. Shortly before half-time Jonathan Nzengo Romford's right back ventured forward with the ball and played a good ball into the box but their forward Khadean Campbell could not make contact.  In the 3 added minutes before half-time Romford's captain Cossington was lucky not to be cautioned for a late challenge on Richens.

Half Time: Romford 0 Kettering Town 0

Just as in the first minute of the first half Brett Solkhon make a mark on the game in the first minute of the second. This time in a positive manner.  JDM ran to the by-line on the edge of Romford's penalty area taking a defender with him.  He laid the ball back to Stohrer who played a deep cross to the back post where Solkhon had drited away from 2 defenders to give himself time and space to pick his spot with his header which he did perfectly to score his 100th first class goal for the club. 0-1 Kettering 46 mins.  2 minutes later Joseph was added to the growing list of Romford's cautions following a heavy challenge on Milnes.  The susequent free kick came to nothing.  The keeper's long clearance though led to an equaliser.  The long ball was chased by Lathaniel Rowe-Turner and Campbell into the box.  With LRT anxious not to concede a penalty Campbell managed to evade him and feed the ball into Greg Akpele who was being marshalled by Toseland, who appeared to lose concentration after taking an arm to the chin letting Akpele cut the ball back to Kurt Smith who took full advantage of his chance with a first time left foot shot to pull Romford back to parity. 1-1 Romford 51 mins.   Kettering responded almost immediately Toseland played a ball along the ground into the box where Cossington tried to shield the ball out for a goal kick.  Milnes wasn't having any of that and chased and pressurised the defender and managed to get imself between ball and defender when he was promptly up-ended in the box for a penalty.  Cossington was added to the book and a case could have been made for a red as he was last man and prevented a goal scoring oppourtunity.  Kettering's penalty king Solkhon stepped up to the mark, sent the keeper to the left and placed the ball to the right. 1-2 Kettering 54 mins.  10 minutes later and an anxious moment for Paul White, going up to collect a long throw into the box he just failed to cleanly catch the ball and it bobbled up into the air but Stohrer was on the back post to clear any danger. Shortly after that the game was put beyond Romford's reach.  With the home team being forced to commit more players to attack Kettering exploited them on the counter-attack.  The ball was played to Kelly who threaded a perfectly weighted ball along to ground to split the Romford defence Hoenes used his pace to sprint onto the ball. He keeps his distance from the keeper, rounds him and passes the ball into the empty net from a sharp angle with the defenders floundering in his wake. 1-3 Kettering 67 mins. 2 miutes later and it was four. Milnes picked the ball on the half way line and after neat passes between him, Solkhon and Stohrer, received the ball again and made a determined run into the box where he tried to pass the ball past the keeper who managed to save it but the rebound went straight to the ever eager Hoenes who sent it goalwards only to be denied by a defender on the goal-line however it rebounded straight to Rhys who put it away on the second attempt. 1-4 Kettering 69 mins.  With the game in the bag Kettering's thought's turned to game management and Kelly was withdrawn replaced by Matty Foy.  Romford also rang the changes replacing 3 forwards.  On 77 minutes Nzengo was yellowed carded for bringing down JDM on the edge of the box after he had turned the defender to give himself a clear sight of goal.  It was good to see the frustration of the Kettering player as it showed a hunger to score goals even when the team are comfortably winning. Romford had a couple of chances at the end.  A uncharacteristic error  by LRT allowed a ball to be played into an unmarked Nick Reynolds in the box but he wanted more time than he had and a lighting fast advance by White stiffled the chance before the attacker knew he had one.  The two Romford full backs were both coming forward now and Nzengo had a good chance with a far post header but put it straight into White's hands.  In added time Kettering almost made it five when more wing wizzardry from Hoenes made himself room to send an inviting hard cross across the face of goal along the ground.  JDM lunged but failed by the narrowest margin to get the slightest touch needed to score.

Full Time: Romford 1 Kettering Town 4

A potential banana skin avoided by a professional Kettering performance.  A game dominated by the better side where ability was always going to trump effort not that Kettering were in anyway lacking effort.  4 more goal's ahead of Tottenham and another milestone for Brett Solkhon.  Only negative point the injury to Borg.

Yellow -  Kettering;  Solkhon Ungentlemanly Conduct,  Borg  Foul

Romford:  Taylor, Ungentlemanly Conduct,  Okoye, Joseph, Cossington  Nzengo  all fouls.
