Match Report

The Poppies earned a very hard fought and, in the end, deserved victory at full time York City today. Ahead in just the 7th minute through Connor Kennedy, the lead was doubled on 25 minutes through loanee Gerry McDonough. A Sean Newton penalty just two minutes after the second goal gave York hope but there were no further goals, with both teams hitting the post in the second half.

The Poppies started positively forcing a couple of Rhys Sharpe long throws into the six yard box, both of which were scrambled away. On 5 minutes the Minstermen nearly benefited from a Kettering defensive error as Chris Smith missed a low cross which then cannoned off of Luke O’Neill and just went past the post for a corner.

On 7 minutes Kettering took the lead. A Sharpe long throw into the box was partly cleared and Kettering worked the ball back on the right side to Connor Kennedy. His low drive evaded every player in the six yard box and also home keeper, Peter Jameson, and went in at the far post.

Kettering threatened again a couple of minutes later as Luke O’Neill’s free kick from 28 yards came off the defensive wall for a corner. Harrison Neal’s restart saw Kennedy head just over the bar.

Another Sharpe throw into the danger area saw a clearance to Neal- but the shot was high and wild.

Home skipper, Sean Newton, saw two headers held by visiting keeper, Rhys Davies, who then saved a Mackenzie Heaney curling left foot shot, as York began to get into the game. However, Kettering suddenly broke down the right and Callum Powell got to the by line to pull the ball back for a shot on goal. The York defence failed to clear and the loose ball was collected by Gerry McDonagh. The on loan striker had plenty to do but found enough space to slot a low shot past Jameson at the left upright.

2-0 up after 25 minutes and looking good, the Poppies were stunned by a penalty award to York a minute later as Neal got in a great block on a shot just inside the penalty area. He was adjudged to have handled the ball at point blank range and yellow carded with Newton ramming the resultant penalty past Davies.

Kettering tried to respond and Powell’s scissor kick from McDonagh’s cross went wide. York were growing into the game now and had a good 10 minute spell without causing the Kettering defence any real problems.

Newton’s 40th minute free kick came off the defensive wall and in probably the home team’s best chance of the half, in added time, Matty Brown had a great chance when unmarked, but headed over the bar from a few yards out.

Half Time:

YORK CITY        1           -          2            KETTERING TOWN

There were no immediate substitutions at the start of the half. Kettering threatened first as McDonagh cut in from the left to cross for Connor Barrett. The Kettering player got his nose on the ball to glance a good chance wide and cause him a nasty bleed which required treatment.

York were also employing long throws into the six yard box and on 50 minutes the impressive Akil Wright headed wide after the throw was not dealt with by the visiting defence.

Kettering enjoyed a decent spell of successfully managing the game despite a yellow card for Assistant Manager, John Ramshaw for an outburst on the touchline.

On 65 minutes, York worked a great move putting Wright clear on goal and Davies made an excellent stop to maintain the Poppies’ lead. Kettering had a brief good spell and on 70 minutes Callum Powell ended up on the floor near the penalty area. With York expecting at best a free kick to Kettering, and at worst a penalty, Powell received a yellow card for simulation. Within minutes the Referee showed a yellow card to someone on the touchline on the advice of his Assistant. It was unclear as to whom he was frantically waving the card, from 30 yards away, and it was assumed it was at Paul Cox.

Connor Kennedy won a 74th minute corner which came to nought and a minute later York threatened through Clayton Donaldson. The York striker appeared to foul his marker and as the Officials saw nothing wrong, Donaldson advanced to hit his right foot shot against the outside of the right post.

Kettering were not anywhere near done as an attacking force as York began to run out of ideas. Kennedy’s header came off a defender for a corner – given as a goal kick to everyone’s amazement and Powell’s 81st minute shot after chasing a through ball was well over the bar. Powell followed this up on 84 minutes with a shot off the post after a mazy run on the right.

The final effort on goal from Kettering’s Neal saw a good block as the Poppies saw out four minutes of added time.
