Tivvy’s Ben Mammola was red carded in the 63rd minute of the game.

A dry day had helped the pitch at Ladysmead, although the pitch was to cut up during the game. The game started at a lively pace. Kettering’s Aaron O’Connor sent in a testing cross from the left early on and keeper, Alexis Andre, got a hand on the ball tothwart Matty Stevens at the far post. Tivvy had a great chance as Gary Mulligan failed to clear his lines and Jordan Rogers,on the right, fired inside the left upright- only to see Paul White make an excellent one handed save. Lindon Meikle’s 14th minute shot from a free kick came off the defensive wall and a couple of minutes later the same player was almost played in by O’Connor – but could just not control the ball in the penalty area. Hotshot Levi Landricombe dragged a right foot shot across goal and wide of the left upright and at the other end Mulligan saw his header held by Andre. Kettering took the lead in simple fashion on 24 minutes. Tom Marshall’s free kick from the halfway line was expertly glanced in off the head of Brett Solkhon. The Poppies had a good spell with a great Rhys Hoenes cross desperately cleared and Mashall’s direct free kick hitting the defensive wall with Meikle firing the rebound wide. Then O’Connor crossed again from the left and Andre flapped the ball against a defender to concede a corner. From the corner Orrin Pendley got under his shot which cleared the bar from a few feet out. Andre was kept busy as he punched a Meikle shot clear and then he made a good save from Kalern Thomas’ accurate and vicious shot from the right. Tivvy did create an excellent chance as a cross came over from the left. Full back Jamie Short had raced into the box- but headed wide at the far post. Michael Landricombe shot wide after a free kick was only partially cleared as half time came with Kettering in the lead.

The Poppies were first to show in the half. Matty Stevens set up Hoenes on the right and the shot was deflected for a corner. The corner was cleared as far as Meikle, who showed great technique to volley a left foot shot forcing Andre to tip over. From that corner, Mulligan headed down and wide. Tivvy then had a good spell, forcing three corners in quick succession –but without positive results as the visiting defence stayed solid. Levi Landicombe’s 58th minute left foot free kick zipped just wide of the right post. Kettering soon regained control though and Hoenes sent O’Connor through, but he fired wide. Tivvy suffered a blow in the 63rd minute when Ben Mammola received a straight red card as he kicked out at Thomas after the Kettering man had been fouled. Unused substitute,George Rogers, was then yellow carded for comments to an Assistant. The Poppies soon took full advantage as Hoenes squared from the right and Stevens adjusted to fire the ball past Andre. O’Connor saw his 70th minute shot deflected wide and then a 76th minute shot blocked. From the corner, Mulligan headed wide. Tivvy had a chance from a left wing corner on 79 minutes as Michael Landricombe won the header only to head it over the bar. Hoenes was still lively for Kettering and his 85th minute run saw the shot saved by Andre. Rene Howe had been on the field since the 73rd minute, when he replaced Stevens, and on 87 minutes could not believe his luck as he spooned the ball over the open goal from a few yards after he was set up by fellow substitute, Gary Stohrer. A minute later it was 3-0. Hoenes was pulled down as he went in on goal and Brett Solkhon converted the penalty. It was a comprehensive win tonight and the Poppies now face another tough away fixture at Chesham United on Saturday.
