Match Report

The scoreline reflected the game tonight. Again, the wind blew, the players of both teams huffed and puffed, and on this occasion no goals were scored. In fact, there was only one save to make in the game for the two keepers, when Jackson Smith smothered a 25th minute shot from Bailey Hobson. Kettering had two great chances, falling to Decarrey Sheriff on 41 minutes and Jordan Crawford in the final minutes of the game and both were not converted.

Callum Stead started and Gary Stohrer dropped to the bench- no doubt being required to play next Saturday as Connor Kennedy will be suspended.

The pitch was in good condition, and yet again a strong wind had a detrimental effect on the game.

The Poppies, in green, got off to a brisk start, putting the reds of Alfreton under some early pressure. Alex Brown’s driven cross from the left was over everyone and some Rhys Sharpe long throws and a couple of corners were all well defended. One of the Sharpe corners from the right saw the low in swinging cross come off the outside of the near post- but keeper, George Willis, had it covered.

There was some loud vocal support from the Poppies travelling fans as another Sharpe free kick was well held by Willis. Then another Sharpe in swinging corner was again collected by Willis. Good runs by, firstly, Connor Barrett and then Alex Brown, sawfirstly Barrett set up Jordan Crawford whose shot was blocked and then Brown’s run and cross from the left forced what was to be an unfruitful corner.

Alfreton finally threatened on 25 minutes as a good move set Bailey Hobson clear on the left, but his left foot shot lacked power and Jackson Smith saved easily.

Around the half hour mark the wind was clearly helping to spoil any flow to the game, which became very scrappy.

Kettering came back into the game in the final minutes of the half. Both Decarrey Sheriff and Connor Kennedy went down as a result of challenges in the home penalty area- with the Referee showing no interest. Then Kettering broke with a two on one chance, and with Callum Stead in a better position to score, Decarrey Sheriff decided to go for goal himself and the chance was lost due to good defending.

There was time for another Kettering chance before the break as a poor clearance fell to Connor Johnson 12 yards out- but his right foot shot flew well over the bar.

ALFRETON  TOWN     0       -       0              KETTERING TOWN

There were no substitutions at half time but with Chris Smith limping for the first few minutes he was replaced by Kevin Joshua on 51 minutes. The game suddenly began to be played at a fast pace as both teams tried to assert themselves. There was however a lack of quality in the football being played.

The regulation Sharpe long throws for Kettering were all being defended well and on 56 minutes Stead set up Crawford for a shot which was well blocked. With little excitement about, both teams won corners in quick succession but defences dominated.

The Poppies were trying to get something going and Connor Barrett saw his 58th minute shot blocked, and then Willis did well to cleanly gather Sharpe’s cross.

On 66 minutes Alfreton’s Bobby Johnson tried a direct shot from a 30 yard free kick which sailed over the bar and soon after Sheriff was flattened in the penalty area- a much better shout for a penalty- but again the Referee was unmoved.

Barrett tried another shot from 30 yards which was well wide and as Alfreton made some substitutions there was the increasing probability that the game was going to end goalless.

Kettering had two chances in the last ten minutes, which was two more than Alfreton, Firstly Kevin Joshua headed over from Sharpe’s free kick – and it was a good opening. Then Jordon Crawford completely mis-kicked in front of goal from Stead’s pass – it was a great chance to win the match.

Kettering now face the long trip to Blyth Spartans this Saturday.
