Match Report

IN BRIEF: The Poppies retained the Northants Hillier Senior Cup tonight with a hard fought 2-1 win over a somewhat weakened Brackley Town side. Brett Solkhon’s two penalties in the 56th and 80th minutes past makeshift keeper, Andy Brown, secured the win-with Shep Morombedzi on the scoresheet for the Saints in the 62nd minute. . THE KETTERING SQUAD: With injuries to Durell Berry,James Brighton and Aaron O’Connor, Matty Stevens back at Peterborough and Liam Bateman and Tom Marshall not in the squad, Ben Baker,Ben Bradshaw and Jack O’Connor were on the bench. Gary Stohrer, Ben Milnes and Wilson Carvalho started as did Brett Solkhon after injury. Wilson Carvalho created an early chance for himself but his right foot shot was just too high. Brackley soon replied as Joe Iaciofano forced Kettering keeper Paul White into a save from a free kick and Kane Felix fired wide from the left. Michael Richens’ 12th minute effort was over the bar and Iaciofano’s 21st minute free kick suffered the same fate. Iaciofano looked the most likely player to score and his flick on 23 minutes fell kindly for White to collect. There was a long stoppage for an injury to Saints’ keeper Alastair Worby after a clash with Rene Howe- the keeper hitting the ground off balance- and he continued until half time. A Morombedzi cross on 36 minutes saw Theo Streete head on for Steve Diggin and the striker could not control his shot which was over the top. Kettering finished the half with a couple of goal efforts – Gary Stohrer firing over before being pulled back for offside and Brett Solkhon heading wide from a Ben Toseland free kick. Half Time: BRACKLEY TOWN 0 - 0 KETTERING TOWN Brackley keeper, Worby didn’t appear for the second half and striker Andy Brown took the keeper’s gloves. The Poppies had the better of the early exchanges in the half with a Gary Mulligan shot blocked away by Luke Graham and Howe heading a Lindon Meikle cross straight to Brown. Kalern Thomas replaced Stohrer at right back and his first real foray forward in the 55th minute saw him brought down for a penalty. Brett Solkhon stroked the penalty past Brown. Brackley equalised in the 62nd minute. A corner on the left was cleared to Shep Morombedzi and his shot seemed to startle White as it flew past him, high just inside the left upright. It was a good strike. White did take a threatening cross off an attacker’s head on 68 minutes to nullify a good attack and a minute later at the other end, Brown made a good save from Carvalho, diving to his left. Another minute passed and Brackley broke on a 5 on 2 situation- a glorious chance to take the lead and inexplicably Iaciofano was caught offside. Kettering responded with three corners- two of which were punched clear by Brown- who was looking quite comfortable between the posts. Jordan Williams fired out of the ground for Brackley as did Richens for Kettering. Substitute for Brackley, Khris Oti miscued after creating a chance on the right just into the six yard box- and it was a let off for Kettering. Kettering were awarded another penalty on 81 minutes with Milnes being brought down and Solkhon again converted past Brown. Rhys Hoenes had entered the fray on 76 minutes replacing Howe and was brought down in the box on 84 minutes – but no penalty was awarded. At the other end Oti appeared to be pushed over from behind by Orrin Pendley and again the Referee deemed no penalty. There was a flurry of goalmouth activity as the game entered the final minutes: Meikle’s shot fell into Brown’s arms; Ben Baker, on for Carvlaho, had the ball in the net- but was offside. Brown had to rush off his line to head away from the advancing Hoenes and then the keeper saved well from Baker. Finally, Baker saw Brown save well with his legs as the young striker burst clear and finallyBaker fired another effort wide. Kettering will now start in the new Central Division on Saturday August 11th and details of all friendly and league fixtures and summer player signings will appear on this website.
