Match Report Bromsgrove Sporting vs KTFC

MATCH SUMMARY:

The Poppies came back from a goal down tonight to record a hard earned 2-1 win at Bromsgrove Sporting’s Victoria Ground, The UK Electrical Stadium. The unfortunate Aaron Powell conceded an own goal on 27 minutes to put the Rouslers in front with Nile Ranger equalizing for the Poppies just before the break. In a much better second half, Kettering peppered the home goal, with Sporting’s keeper, and man of the match Charlie Price outstanding, but he could not prevent new signing, Johnny Edwards from converting a 65th minute penalty which completed the scoring.

THE KETTERING SQUAD:

Lewis White joined Dan Jarvis and Kai Fifield on the injured list and Harlain Mbayo came into the starting line up. On to the bench came new signing, Johnny Edwards and there was a welcome return for Gary Stohrer.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED:

It was  a dry start to the game on a decent surface albeit the rain came in the latter stages of the match.

The Poppies started well, with two early Ben Hart crosses from the right. The first within a minute of the start of the game saw Isiah Noel-Williams set up Tyree Wilson, but the shot was wild. The second on 4 minutes was held by home keeper, Charlie Price.

Sporting’s first foray into the Kettering penalty area saw a corner won, but well cleared by the visiting defence. Aaron Powell was cautioned in the 13th minute for a clumsy foul and the resultant free kick came to nothing. Hart, on the right again, caused panic in the Rouslers defence and his dangerous cross was scrambled away.

Recent signing for Bromsgrove, Josh Ezewele, had to leave the field after an awkward fall and a possible shoulder dislocation and he was replaced by Ethan Patterson.

Bromsgrove took the lead on 27 minutes. A cross in from the left came off the leg of Powell and dribbled past a wrong-footed Dan Jezeph.

Bromsgrove Sporting 1  Kettering Town 0

The goal seemed to spur the Poppies into action. Wes York got a cross in from the right which drifted out for a goal kick and in the 34th minute, Price made the first of a number of good saves as he turned a York shot past the post. This was followed up by a decisive run by Wilson, but his cross was too far in front of his teammates.

The Poppies were not to be denied though as just before the break, Hart got away down the right to cross low into the box and Nile Ranger did well to adjust, stretch and poke the ball past the diving Price.

Half Time:

Bromsgrove Sporting    1   –   1       Kettering Town

Johnny Edwards made his Kettering debut replacing Ranger at the start of the half.

The half was to be much more exciting as the Poppies poured forward and threatened Price’s goal.

Early in the half, Bromsgrove’s Shay Palmer put a weak shot at Jezeph but this was to be a rare home attack this half.

Price made another great save as he blocked Devon Kelly-Evans’ shot, and from the corner, Connor Johnson’s effort at the far post was kept out by Price. On 51 minutes, great work by Wilson on the left set up Noel-Williams for a shot but he lifted the ball over the bar.

Bromsgrove countered with Theo Robinson having a shooting chance which he sent out of the ground! On 57 minutes, Price saved an Andi Thanoj  free kick with Bromsgrove then breaking quickly and Carter Lycett forced a save from Jezeph diving full stretch to his left.

Kettering were now upping the tempo looking for that second goal, and Johnny Edwards’ shot was collected by Price. Patterson cleared a Wilson shot off the line and in the ensuing action, Ash Carter also saved a shot on the line from Edwards, and another defender saved on the line again from Noel-Williams.

It was intense pressure, and with the home defence wilting, the second goal came from a penalty after Patterson blocked a shot with his hands earning himself a caution. Edwards scored from the spot sending Price the wrong way.

65 minutes: Bromsgrove Sporting  1  Kettering Town  2

Just a couple of minutes later, Price somehow saved Kelly-Evans shot with his legs. Price then got down to save another shot from Edwards.

Bromsgrove made substitutions to try to rescue the game and Charlie Wragg had a half chance just after coming on but he shot wide of the left post.

Price somehow saved a low shot from York and on 80 minutes made a great save as Edwards shot hit him and looped over the crossbar. Another Edwards effort was held by Price and a further Edwards shot beat Price, but was hooked off the line by a defender.

In added time, York shot just wide for Kettering, but on the strength of the second half performance, the Poppies deserved their win.
